5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book, 22 April 2002
By A Customer
For anybody interested in the more technical details of DAB this is a very useful book.

I only wish that more broadcasters would read this book because they would then begin to use the DAB system as it is intended to be used. Some of the interesting information that I have learnt in this book include the fact that the audio should be uncompressed prior to transmission because there is a function called dynamic range control (DRC) that allows the compression data to be transmitted separately to the uncompressed audio stream and allows the listener to choose the level of compression that he/she would like to hear. This would allow the uncompressed data to be listened to at home so that for high bit rate channels near-CD quality can be achieved instead of the highly compressed 'loud' sound that we have to put up with on DAB in the UK which is 'nowhere near CD-quality' as a result of this dynamic range compression that the broadcasters apply prior to transmission and cannot be removed afterwards.

Another interesting fact is that most of the DAB stations in the UK are transmitting at a bit rate that was classified as "annoying" by a blind, subjective expert listening study. Further to this it seems that DAB does not have to use MPEG Layer 2 because there is a data channel through which any data format can be transmitted. This allows the possibilities of using the far better AAC audio encoder so long as this functionality was built into the receivers in future.

Briefly, this book contains a lot of information for anybody who is interested in the more technical aspects of DAB. It basically describes in readable-English the DAB specification. The DAB specification is really just a very technical manual and is not meant to be read like a book because it is too technical...
