5.0 out of 5 stars In 19 years of life, this is the SCARIEST BOOK I EVER READ!, 29 Sep 2000
By A Customer
A long time ago, when I was just a little girl, I was reading through the juvenile section of the local library when I came across this haunting story. The tale has a classical build-up in diary format, sucking you right into the plight of the main character, and proceeds nicely to scare the bujeezus out of you. Top-notch science fiction, sadly tucked onto childrens' shelves everywhere, when it's (IMO) perfectly suited for adults as well. This book truly stands up to be read again and again, especially on dark and stormy nights, when you start wondering what if you really were ALL ALONE...

3.0 out of 5 stars slow but steady, 19 Feb 2004
This isn't the fastest moving book ever - there are long passages of descriptive writing which make it a probably a less appealing choice amongst the quicker pace of modern children's books. It's a shame that these passages do distract from moments of action which are worthy of more contemporary fiction and are certainly more adult in nature such as shootings and attempted rape. There are certainly themes galore in this book: the effects of isolation, the strength of individuals, growing up, loss of innocence, faith and belief being amongst them. The ending is maybe a little unsatisfactory, being finished after the author's death - but it allows the reader to make their own minds up about what is to happen and whether a happy ending is possible. Does provoke some thought - if you have the temperament to wade through the step by step details of the central character's life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A compelling tale that makes for a magnificent read., 13 Jun 2000
By A Customer
The setting of this rivetting story is in the desolated valley which has just escaped a nuclear attack. Ann Burden has managed to cope alone and manage her own life and she believes she is the only person left alive until a man arrives in the valley. She is relieved at first but her joy is replaced by fear and uncertainty as she does not know whether he is a friend or a deadly foe that will put her life at risk. This wonderfully crafted story is written in a diary format. It has portrayed human nature and peoples' natural instinct to survive. This is an incredibly real-life account of a sixteen year old girl's story.I recommend this book strongly.A superb read!
