4.0 out of 5 stars King Midas meets Robert Maxwell, 23 Feb 2001

Long before the press and federal authorities got on to Bill Clinton's back regarding his controversial pardon of Marc Rich this book by A. Craig Copetas details just how Mr Rich ammassed a huge fortune through a combination of greed, ruthlessness and sheer cunning to become the world's most powerful commodoties dealer. The Belgia born multi-lingual college drop-out became head dealer at Phillip Bros in New York before launching his own company with close friend Pincus Green in 1974. They cornered the market in oil and precious metals before falling foul of the US Government in the early Eighties. Faced with a 325 year jail term for treason, tax evasion and any number of other federal offences Rich is perhaps the US Government's most wanted man - or rather was! Copetas sheds little light on the man himself who remains an enigma throughout the book; he is not quoted directly and there are no accounts from family or close friends. This is instead an examination of his business tactics and an attempt to explain just how one man could so systematically con the world's most powerful government and get away with it. Rich by name, rich by nature. Was ever a man more aptly named?

A very interesting insight into Mr Rich and his minions. If you're interested in how companies which were born from the Rich stable (like Glencore, Trafigura etc) operate then this is worth reading. A tad dated obviously but none the worse for that.
