Product Description

Designed for Junior/Senior undergraduate courses.

This revision of a classical text is intended to acquaint the reader, who has no prior knowledge of the subject, with the theory of x-ray diffraction, the experimental methods involved, and the main applications. The text is a collection of principles and methods designed directly for the student and not a reference tool for the advanced reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars an excellent text on x-ray diffraction, 24 Jul 2008
By Shiv Sharma "shiv" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book remains one of the classic books on the subject of x-ray diffraction. This book is divided into 20 chapters.
It starts with introducing properties of x-rays and geometry of crystals.
Chepters 3 to 5 concentrate on diffraction: geometry, intensities, real samples. Chapters 6 to 8 are on diffractometer measurements, powder measurements and laue photographs. chepters 9 and 10 are on phase identification and determination of crystal structure.
There is one chapter on stress measurement suitable for engineers in the field of crystallography. This book also deals with orientation of single crystals, small angle scattering and transmission electron microscopy. The book has been written in a simple language with clear diagrams.

5.0 out of 5 stars A BOOK ON X-RAY DIFFRACTION FROM AN OPERATIONAL STANDPOINT, 21 April 1999
By A Customer
Cullity's book is, I think, one of the most interesting books I've ever come across. Let me explain why...if you know diffraction at the level of Ewald sphere, reciprocal lattice, point and space groups at least, you would realize that Dr. Cullity has very effectively accomplished the task of introducing the reader to almost all applied aspects of x-ray diffraction. In this book, you would barely find any word on real space vs. reciprocal space, their relationship by the Fourier Transform etc., the necessary fundamentals are given at such an elementary level, that it requires barely any background beyond Phys 101. In all fairness, to reduce a very complex phenomenon to an easily understandible level certainly requires a lot of creativity... The books' first two chapters efficiently summarize what a person needs to know as the bare minimum background to later learn the specific techniques to analyze materials by x-ray diffraction. The remainder of the book is devoted to experimental methods which are very effectively presented and thoroughly discussed. To make the long story short, this book is for the handyman not for a scientist who's special interest might be in x-ray crystallography or x-ray diffraction. If you want to have an idea what kind of information can be obtained (ranging from lattice parameter determination to quantitative phase analysis) using x-ray diffraction in the study of solids, then this book is for you...

5.0 out of 5 stars A "Classic" of Materials Science., 29 Dec 1998
By A Customer
This is an all encompassing book for materials scientist in the field of materials characterization by x-ray diffraction methods. The basic concepts are well explained, as in Cullity's other book on magnetic materials. These texts remain the standards despite their age, because of their completeness and clear explanations with pictures. Provided time and effort on reading them, one can become a firm expert in their respective fields. It is more complete than Hammond's introductory book, and better than other newer, more technical books that may omit the basic science and jump right into the new devices not available at the time of the reviewed book's printing.
