Tony Ross's charming re-telling of this funny folk tale is one of my youngest son's favourite books.

Jack is so lazy he just sits around the house while his mother does all the work, and his mother is fed up with him so she insists he goes out to work. He is paid a shiny pound for his first day's work, but he drops it on the way home. "Twit!" his mother cries "YOu should have put it in your pocket" So next day Jack goes to work at a dairy and is paid with a jug of milk. Obeying his mother's instructions, he pours the milk into his pocket. "Silly sausage head!" shouts his mother when he gets home "You should have carried the jug on your head" And so it goes on, with Jack getting it wrong every time, and his mother getting ruder and ruder in her comments on his intelligence. Meanwhile, the King and Queen are hoping that someone will come along who can make their daughter smile....

Tony Ross's delightful illustrations complement this cheerful tale, it should appeal to any child who likes to laugh.
