Product Description

Review
Taking into account recent research on polarization, additions have been made to chapters on stimulated Raman scattering and four-wave mixing. Targeted for optical engineers, researchers, scientist and graduate students, the 549-page volume addresses pulse propagation in fibers.-Photonics Spectra, january 2007

- K.K.LEE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO, COLORADO SPRINGS
REVIEWS OF THE FIRST EDITION "This book is...timely and occupies a unique niche...On an absolute scale, it is an excellent book the same level as the very best books published to date on optical fiber and systems in general." (- OPTICS AND PHOTONICS NEWS) "This is a well written, self contained, and extensively referenced book. It is a useful reference for experts, and could well be used as a text for graduate courses...a welcome addition to the quantum electronics literature." --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars comprehensive, well organized, complete, a must have, 27 Mar 2001
By abang_joe@yahoo.com (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
The third edition continue the uniqueness of the first and second edition of the book by retaining most of the original material with more recent theoretical and experimental results that have been published by researchers all over the world. The addition of the new chapter of 'polarization effect' is very timely, as polarization issues have become increasingly more important in today's high-speed optical communication systems for which the phenomenon of polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) has become a limiting factor. Other chapters including: pulse propagation in fibers, group-velocity dispersion (GVD), self-phase modulation (SPM), optical soliton, cross-phase modulation (XPM), stimulated Raman scattering (SRS), stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and parametric processes. The 'optical pulse compression compression' chapter has been excluded though. The inclusion of problems at the end of every chapter is a very good effort by the author to help instructors and students enrolling related graduate courses in universities. One won't find any materials about the application of every nonlinear effect in this edition as in earlier editions though as they have been compiled together in the new complimentary book 'application of nonlinear fiber optics'. This is definitely a unique source of reference with comprehensive, well organized and complete coverage on the subject. A must have for people working with nonlinear fiber optics including engineers, researchers as well as graduate students.
