Album Description
The new album from guitarist Pete Oxley, following on from his
two previous well received albums for 33 Records, is his first new
recording for 8 years. The first New Noakes Quartet was formed when Oxley
lived in Paris in the 1980s. Since his return to the UK he has continued
international tours with New Noakes Quartet and notched up numerous radio
and TV broadcasts.
The quartet is made up of keyboard player Dave Gordon who is well known for
his work for Theo Travis, bassist Raph Mizraki who plays everything from
funk to folk and Paris based Etienne Brachet who has recorded with a great
number of diverse artists, including Birelli Lagrene and Mike Stern.
For this recording they were joined by a special guest, the St Louis born
saxophonist Butch Thomas, who has now joined the group on a permanent
basis. He has worked and recorded with Jaco Pastorious (1983-7) and with
artists such as The Temptations, Lester Bowie, Elton John and James Taylor.
In 1996, Butch replaced Branford Marsalis with Sting - performing 235 gigs
worldwide over a two-year period.
In his liner notes guitarist John Etheridge states "Pete Oxley is at the
top of his game throughout with harmonically aware, fluent jazz-toned
work...this is as strong an album of contemporary composition and soloing
as you'll hear anywhere."
