Amazon.co.uk Review
Three sees a return to
Sea and Cake guitarist Archer Prewitt's alterna-pop roots. Fans of the Chicago post-rock fraternity not familiar with Prewitt's solo work and past guise as frontman for the (sadly defunct)
Coctails be warned--there is no free jazz noodling to be found here. Rather, with its airy harmonies and jangly guitars,
Three has a distinctly early-90s indie feel. Album opener "Over the Sun" is reminiscent of early
REM but with a decidedly more sunny feel, while tracks such as "Behind Your Sun" and "No Defense" nod in the general direction of 60s psychedelia's more light-hearted moments. Lyrically,
Three is often bleak (roll on the
Nick Drake comparisons), but it lacks the immediacy of beautifully melancholy previous album "White Sky" and the haunting "Gerroa Songs". It's not his best effort, but it's still a fine excuse for an album.--
