So just what is the secret to Chest Rockwell's success with the ladies? Well, according to Chest its
Lovage--Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By from
Handsome Boy Modeling School graduate Nathaniel Merriweather, aka
Dan The Automator. Fresh from his collaboration on the
Gorillaz debut, this self-confessed homage to the music of
Serge Gainsbourg is full of fantastic over-the-top innuendos, tongue-in-cheek skits and--perhaps unsurprisingly considering its topic--some ultra laid-back beats. Ex-
Faith No More lead singer Mike Patton, along with Jennifer Charles (of US indie band
Elysian Fields) and Prince Paul (aka Chest Rockwell) might seem like odd choices for updating the passion obsessed gaul, but the resulting tracks work surprisingly well. Mike Patton's deep, melodramatic vocals on "Anger Management" sound like it could have come straight from
Histoire De Melody Nelson, Gainsbourg's own concept album dedicated to obsessive and ultimately tragic love. Jennifer Charles' simpering vocals on the other hand are more than a nod to Gainsbourg's muse Jane Birkin. But "Lovage" with its sleepy trip hop beats is much more than an updated Gainsbourg pastiche, it's a guide, an instruction manual if you will--and if it helped Chest Rockwell, it just might help you!. Watch out for the informative skits from Sir Damien Thorne VII (aka Damon Albarn),
Afrika Bambaataa, and a guest appearance from
De La Soul's Maseo. --
