5.0 out of 5 stars At least four years ahead of its time, 9 Sep 2004
By R. Hamilton "Lenny Banter" - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
The third and final Pink Fairies studio album from their first phase, Paul Rudolph had left to be replaced by guitarist Larry Wallis. Allegidly Wallis had never written a song before he joined the Fairies, but he was given the task of writing all of the songs. He composed some of the band best and most concise material yet and it could even be said to be slightly ahead of its time. It was released in 1973 but sounded as though it should have come from 1977. A punk record, this most defiantly is. The opening track, City Kids," is dynamic and superbly sets the tone for the rest of the record. The next two tracks, I Wish I Was a Girl and Street Urchin continue the tone and continue to take the band away from the riff jam basics that spoilt their second album. With the other remastered Pink Fairies albums, Kings of Oblivion divides its bonus tracks between unfamiliar versions of familiar material (including an urgent alternate mix of "City Kids") and non-album material. This includes two versions of the single only songs Well Well Well and the country rock-ish Hold On dating from 1972. These were cut with Wallis' short-lived predecessor Mick Wayne and it is wonderful to have both of these tracks available on CD for the first time. The Kings of Oblivion was greeted at the time as the Pink Fairies' best album. It is the best summation of everything that the Pink Fairies promised. For punks and music lovers everywhere.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pink Fairies - 'Kings Of Oblivion' (Polydor), 21 Dec 2007
Originally released in 1973, this was their third album. Line-up for this record is strictly a trio, Duncan Sanderson-bass & vocals, Larry Wallis-guitar & vocals and Russell Hunter-drums. I, personally was impressed with "Wish I Was A Girl", "Chromium Plating", the boot-stomping instrumental "Raceway" (almost worth the admission price, alone) and "Street Urchin". Wallis's ripping guitar playing virtually makes this CD reissue rock MORE than what I had expected. Four bonus tracks have been tagged on for good measure. A definite should-have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Larry's Golden Moment, 24 May 2007
By K. Phillips "A Dream Spider" (Bristol) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I'll keep this brief as other reviewers have covered virtually every other base. This is the best Pink Fairies release. In came Larry Wallis who had, apparantly, never written a song before, and proceeded to turn the band on it's musical head. The brilliant "When's the fun begin" and "I wish I was a girl" are both included as well as the better known "City Kids" (as later covered by early Motorhead)and "Street Urchin"!

Never have the Fairies sounded so accomplished.

Larry threatened to do it all again a few years ago with his solo release "Death in the Guitarfternoon". A very close relation to "Kings of Oblivion".

2.0 out of 5 stars NOT the Best Rock Album (of 1973)!
