Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Norton Internet Security 2002 is an all-round PC security suite designed to protect you when you go online. Symantec's previous editions of Norton Internet Security offered a separate Family Edition; that edition's features have now been incorporated into the standard product. NIS 2002 is also Windows XP compatible.

Four tools make up the NIS 2002 suite--Norton AntiVirus 2002, Norton Personal Firewall 2002 (two top-notch products also sold separately), Privacy Control and Parental Control. This is the same mix as before but each element has been modestly upgraded. For example, Instant-Message Filtering keeps personal or confidential material from being transferred via instant messenger while the ad-blocking feature removes banner ads from online sites, noticeably speeding up page downloads. The Parental Controls feature in the new release keeps young people from accessing inappropriate material through file-sharing programs and instant messengers in addition to blocking specific Web sites' content.

Like earlier editions, NIS 2002 is virtually self-configuring--simply insert the CD, install and reboot. Then use the Security Assistant wizard to customise your level of protection simply by clicking links or answering yes/no questions, although the pre-configured settings are sufficient to protect PCs in most situations. A new network wizard makes configuration of the personal firewall on home networks easy by detecting local files and printer shares. It also greatly simplifies setting up a firewall to protect multiple PCs sharing one Net connection. It automatically identifies all machines on the network and configures the gateway that is actually connected to the Net. If you already have NIS 2001 this year's model may not be a compelling upgrade, but those without PC protection software or for users of Windows XP, Norton Internet Security 2002 is a good all-round solution. --Roger Gann

5.0 out of 5 stars Good bye to all my "little friends", 22 Mar 2002
First of all, I didn't find the installation and setup to be difficult (W98-2nd edition), and I would rate myself as an intermediary user with few years online presence. I think the fact that I went online without any protection (in particular since I had a constant cable connection for two years now) with a windows box may qualify for insanity. I had no idea how easy it is to access someone elses computer, and looking at the sheer number of attacks in the log file the last 7 days I'm certain that the only reason nobody of my "visitors" prior damaged my files, was because I have not pissed off anybody or they rated what was on my harddrive just too boring to bother. Going online without firewall/virus protection is like running around naked in a Siberian jail, you will get sick and you will get raped, if you forgive me the analogy. I don't have any kids so I didn't install the parental control, but another sweet function is the ad-block, I've not had any screen splitting flashing banners or multiple pop-ups since, just with the standard configuration and not using the additional trashcan function and it makes using e.g. yahoo so much more bareable.
I frequently (about 4-8 times a day) get the alert message that a remote user is scanning my ports to see wheter I have any Trojans on my box and since it logs the IP address of that person, I go to the whois website, find out which service the address is coming from and write an abuse mail with a copy/paste of the firewall log. If everybody was doing that, perhaps the script kiddies could be thought a lesson regarding privacy, and how to honor it.

Speaking of privacy, it also controls which information your browser is leaking to the website you're on. Oh and another thing, if you think that e.g. Outlook and IE are the only progs on your box which can access the internet, think again. I had 41..., and from now on _I_ determine which ones may, or may not have that ability...

Well, let my not blab on much more, all I can say is that buying this software was one of the best things I did since I entered the internet. If you are not protected yet, think of your computer as a house without back wall, and NIS a standby group of loyal bodyguards. NIS is an amazing package, not only does it work well but it "feels" good and _is_ easy to use as well that it is flexible and let's you configure it in detail if you want to. And no, they have not paid me to write this;-), I'm just really really happy with the little bugger.

4.0 out of 5 stars Norton Internet Security 2002- not for beginners, 20 Feb 2002
By Alan Parry (alan.parry@planet.nl) (Stolwijk (near Gouda), The Netherlands) - See all my reviews
I bought this product, in order to keep my household (1 on-line PC in each of the 3 children's bedrooms + my own PC) virus & hacker free, and to make sure my youngest son (8) didn't surf unwillingly into "playboy" sites. It works extremely well, but installing it still needs some IT knowledge. Definitely not a "plug & play" product for Mam & Dad who want to exert a bit of "parental control" on their kid's Internet use. If you have some IT background I can completely recommend it. If you're a average "home" user, you'll probably need some sort of help setting up the accounts / Internet privacy / firewall. When using it on your own computer, and you are using things like Internet banking, and other such "normal" transactions (Dialing into your office computer etc.), the product needs to be programmed to accept these "attacks" by TCP-IP addresses. Once you've set up all this, you're completely secure!!!
PS My teenage children hate it!!!! (I wonder why?)

5.0 out of 5 stars It's good!, 5 Oct 2001
By Whopper (England) - See all my reviews
This is a pretty good all round internet security package. I decided to get some sort of anti-virus software on my home PC after seeing work PC's being taken down with various virus's because their virus definitions were not up to date at the time. The instructions book that comes with the pack is simple and comprehensive and tells you how to set up the software to your particular needs. It's all pretty simple and easy to use and appears to do the job well!
