The film opens with a beach party collecting cell phones setting the scene for isolation. A large object is found on the beach. In the morning, the only people left are those that weren't touching the sand. They soon figure out the sand eats living things and they need to stay off. The phones are in the trunk of a car that won't start because the lights were left on. There is a boyfriend issue that doesn't distract us from the sand eating people with blood and gore effects.

Acting could have been better, likewise for the dialogue. Film needed to be lighter to compliment the cheese. 2 1/2 stars

With a minimal cast, pretty ropey special effects, and a concept that reminds one of the eighties horror Blood Beach, The Sand shouldn't be as much fun as it is, but when the cast put in some surprising performances, and the poor acting crew are killed off, there is just something that is likable about this b-movie fodder.

So the aim of the game is to stay off the sand, or else the demons of bad CGI will come and get you, so the majority of the film is seeing the six members of the cast shout at each other, discover things about themselves and the sand, and us guessing who will be next.

We have three in the car, two in the outlook post, and a fat guy in a bin, with an appendage scrawled in his face. Now there are no prizes for guessing who is the most annoying one out of the six, but you find yourself praying for them to come to a sticky end.

It's not the tensest film ever made, and the group make some really silly decisions, but halfway through, Jamie Kennedy pops up, looking realistically hungover, realising he's probably the selling point of the film, spouts a few one liners, and not much more. But it's such a welcome relief in the films narrative to be introduced to a new character, no matter how inane they appear to be.

The lat act treats us to the neon tentacle show, and the film ends quickly and sufficiently.

The film never outstays it's welcome, it's neat little idea, and you'll forget about it no sooner than you've switched it off.

It should be a terrible film, it has the makings of a complete disaster, but when you realise the makers have put a little effort into the coherence of the plot, you like it just that little more....

I always wonder what people who buy these things expect? Okay its not Shakespeare or star wars but you don't expect those levels of dialogue or special effects in a straight to dvd horror. The story here is pretty obvious (even the title gives it away). But the acting is good. They couldn't have done any more with the material and I've seen tons of way worse performances where the "actors" looked like they only got the parts because they were friends of the producer or were standing about in the vicinity at the time. The special effects aren't fantastic but they're okay for this level of film. All in all it is what it is. It's a pretty fun b type horror which at least isn't based on found footage, jerky camera action, or lame actors keen to show their silicon.

Almost a reboot of the 80's shocker Blood Beach which starred B movie icon John Saxon but not in the same league!! Lead characters were awful, shallow superficial stereotypes. Not enough gore to compensate for the dire performances from the actors...not so bad it's good... More just plain bad!!
