Product Description

Lily James and Sam Riley star in this comedy horror retelling of Jane Austen's classic based on Seth Grahame-Smith's parody novel. When the deceased come back from the dead following the black plague familiar characters including Elizabeth Bennet (James) and Mr Darcy (Riley) have more to worry about than love and relationships as both men and women unite to fight off a horde of zombies. The cast also features Lena Headey, Matt Smith, Douglas Booth and Charles Dance.

Despite mixed reviews for this horror/period drama mash-up based on the bestselling novel of the same name, I for one thoroughly enjoyed it. A romp from start to finish, this isn’t what casual cinema-goers who haven’t read the novel might expect – less zombie apocalypse, more Austen pastiche; the movie crackles with the tension between Sam Riley’s Mr Darcy and Lily James’ almost unbearably desirable Elizabeth Bennett. However, it is arguably ex-Doctor Who and real-life paramour of Lily James, Matt Smith, who pretty much steals every scene he is in; his interplay with James, Riley, and the Bennett paterfamilias (a patrician Charles Dance), as well as his typically bonkers manner, are absolutely delightful, and as Mr Collins, the unfortunate gooseberry in the relationship between Elizabeth and pretty much every man she meets, his performance alone makes this worth watching.

It helps you appreciate this if you are familiar with Pride and Prejudice and have an appreciation for mindless zombie movies. Because this straddles both which is some what of a leap but some how it does it. For the Pride and Prejudice fan it's all there, the sexual politics, the straight laces manners and constant standing on ceremony, everything according to protocol, the crinolines, bonnets and afternoon tea, never raising your voice and precise speech. For the mindless zombie movie fan there's zombies aplenty, loads of gore and disfigurement, all accompanied with marshal arts and sword fights. All very silly but all done with tongue firmly stuck in cheek. Is it a comedy? well it as it moments that are very funny but not a comedy as such. Though Matt Smith is some what over the top as the naïve parson but very entertaining. Most of the original Pride and Prejudice plot line is in there if you look for it but is some what buried under the all pervasive zombie infestation which tends to take centre stage and command your immediate attention. The book this was taken from is one of a few in this vein of taking classic but to most sedate novels and giving them a horror mash up. Hope they film some more as it give both genre a long needed new dimension.

The film is good and the cast well chosen. Definitely, in my opinion one of the most attractive Mr Darcy's I've ever seen and Lily James makes an equally attractive Elizabeth Bennett.

I read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies several years ago and went in to the cinema expecting to see what was essentially just a retelling of Jane Austin's original work, but with a backdrop of zombies (which is essentially what the Quirk Classics book was). However, The plot had completely changed and dramatised to the point that it had very little to do with the writing it is based upon.

***SPOILERS***
Instead of zombies playing havoc in the background of Lizzie's musings over Mr Darcy and her woes at the supposed mistreatment of Mr Wickham and her sister Jane, the film instead makes their affairs a mere backdrop to the imminent invasion of the zombies, which can now not only talk, but are also organised (so they don't go around confusing cauliflowers for brains unfortunately) and are led by an anti-christ. There is also no mention of Charlotte's affliction (which took us a sizeable part of the book) and Lydia's honour is left practically intact. The film ends with explosions and the grave knowledge that the end is nigh, which is in sharp contrast to the book.

In summary, I found myself enjoying the film very much, but to any wondering how similar it is to the book of the same name - it is as if the screenwriters saw the title and made up their own version from there.

Also Matt Smith is hilarious.

As a huge Pride and Prejudice fan I couldn't decide whether to be intrigued or repulsed by the idea of this film. I went to watch it with a friend at the cinema as the other options were limited and I had very minimal expectations, particularly as I don't do zombies. But I loved it and will now be buying the dvd when released. The cast were, without exception, fantastic. They captured with ease the characteristics of the original Austen characters and their relationships. Before watching I couldn't see how this would work, the mash up of two such different genres seemed insane, but it was a great mixture of tongue in cheek / laugh out loud humour with the expected period romance. After the initial 'what??' reaction, I quickly accepted the zombies as just another type of enemy the militia may have protected people from, though loved the fact that the Bennett sisters became warriors too! Considering there was lots of zombie stuff it was not particularly scary as it was tempered by humour. Definitely glad I stepped out of my comfort zone and took a chance!

What possessed me to watch this film I do not know. I love Jane Austen and was prepared to… I don’t know what. The film is pointless for a fan of Ms Austen. I guess it might be a bit of entertainment (or a lot, after all the book Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: The Classic Regency Romance-now with Ultraviolent Zombie Mayhem! (Quirk Classics) was a bestseller!) for zombie fans.

It’s mildly entertainment when Mr Collins – sorry the Reverend Mr Collins – is present and scones are served. Also, it was amusing to see old Lannister and Cersei trying to pretend they don’t know each other, really. Other than that… Sam Riley, why oh why.

If you are not a zombie fan – avoid. If you love classic Pride and Prejudice (Collector's Library) – avoid. If you prefer real cinema to parody – avoid. I watched and hope to forget soon. SURPRISINGLY, acting was good! An extra star for that!
