For Creepshow 2, the quickie 1987 sequel to the Stephen King-scripted/George Romero-directed 1982 original, Romero shifted jobs to become the screenwriter, earning King (who also has a goony cameo as a trucker) a "based on stories by" credit. Cinematographer Michael Gornick stepped up to make an uninspiring directorial debut, turning out a conventional TV-look picture unlike the sometimes striking Creepshow.

A frame story mixes live action and cartoon as a small boy leafs through the latest issue of his favourite horror comic while plotting revenge against neighbourhood bullies. A pun-dropping host called the Creep (played by Tom Savini when not a cartoon) introduces three anecdotes. In "Old Chief Wooden Head", George Kennedy and Dorothy Lamour are kindly Western shopkeepers killed by tearaways and avenged by the wooden Indian which stands outside the place. In "The Raft", four obnoxious teens are terrorised on a lake by a hungry slime-monster. And in "The Hitch-Hiker", hit-and-run driver Lois Chiles is haunted by her squashed victim, who keeps reappearing in a progressively battered forms. Though King and Romero deliver a good mix of cynical and melodramatic dialogue, the stories are disappointingly thin and predictable, with especially weak punch-lines. Of the performers, only Chiles really works up the hysterical attack needed to play a comic book character.

I agree with other reviews here that it is not up there with Creepshow 1 but all in all it is a sufficiently worthy sequel.Holy moley it has Steve King in so thats a plus.But considering the financial constraints put on the team they did the franchise justice.Unlike Creep 3 which is pants!!!The Hitchhiker is the best tale with The Raft a close 2nd and Old Chief Woodenhead the weakest but i love it when the indian thug with the hair struts and preens.The wooden effect of Wooden Heads movements are great.As Romero states in the interview on Creep 1 if he could make them now he could blow them out of the water.And i think with the resurgence of Hammer and Universal remakes a good attempt to do more EC comics anthology movies should be undertaken.NOT in the Saw vain though but a serious tribute.Its all Marvel at the moment which to be honest although good are getting slightly boring.

Creepshow 2 is underrated in the vault of 80s horrors. Consisting of three of my all-time favorite snippets, Old Chief Woodenhead, The Raft and The Hitchhiker and bogged down by a crudely animated wraparound tale of a child's purchase of a Venus flytrap bulb from the mail order section of his favorite comic book. While not as memorable as the first outing, Creepshow 1 which was a cult classic, this sequel still manages to be an entertaining anthology horror film.

In the first segment, Old Chief Woodenhead is pure Stephen King with respected, relatable characters that actually seem real. A kind elderly couple's (George Kennedy) general store is robbed by the son of a tribal elder and subsequently stalked by a gigantic native statue that's becomes alive to seek vengeance.

The Raft adds a solid amount of suspense and surprise in an obvious 80s nod to The Blob that follows a group of teens' trip for a day of fun at the lake. The segment is about four scantily-clad teenagers who arrive at a deserted lake, late one summer, for an afternoon swim but find that something thoroughly unpleasant is waiting for them. The special effects are well below par with King himself commenting that the monster in the lake looks something like "a dirty old man's raincoat". Stil it does have some decent gore and a nice conclusion.

The third and probably best story is The Hitchhiker and stars Louis Chiles as a bored, rich housewife who regularly enjoys the services of a gigolo. On her way home from such an encounter she accidentally runs over a young Hitchhiker (played by stuntman Tom Wright) killing him instantly. I'm a huge fan of Creepshow, so this film always had a lot to live up to, sadly it falls short but is still a very good sequel. It doesn't come close to matching the quality of its predecessor, but it is a great film compared to the horrid cash in that was Creepshow 3. Creepshow 2 has three stories compared to five in the first, and none of them are nearly as good as Something To Tide You Over or The Crate from Creepshow.

The first segment is called Old Chief Woodenhead, George Kennedy and Dorothy Lamour play a kindly old couple who run the local store in an almost deserted town. Local Indians owe them money, unable to pay them, they leave the couple with some of their people's most valued possessions until the debt is paid. Moments later, a group of hoodlums rob the store and murder the couple. The wooden Chief that stands outside the store, seeks revenge. It has some great acting courtesy of Kennedy, Lamour and Frank Salsedo. Holt McCallany, Don Harvey and David Holbrook play the hoodlums, Holbrook is Hal Holbrook's son who starred in the first film.

The Raft is next, this seems to be widely considered as the strongest story of the three, and I agree. Four teenagers (two girls, two boys) are out in the middle of nowhere, they swim out to a raft where something slimy is waiting for them. There's a black oil slick type of creature waiting in the water that wants to devour the kids. The Raft is full of tension, great music and some gruesome deaths.

Lastly is The Hitchhiker. A woman has been cheating on her husband and is racing home in an attempt to beat her husband there, she hits and kills a hitchhiker and carries on going. Afraid of her husband finding out about her infidelities, or scared of getting arrested for manslaughter, she commits a hit and run.Read more ›

Before I begin the review, I want to point something out to those of you considering purchasing this version of Creepshow 2 (1987). This states it is the special edition, which it is (Anchor Bay, ASIN: B00076SJFA). However, there is another version on region 2 with exactly the same cover, but not a special edition (Boulevard Entertainment, ASIN: B003H9MXRE): I have both versions and they both have the same extensive extra features on. Don't be fooled into paying more, unless you want the cover to say special edition, because that is the only extra feature you will get.

The movie, then. I liked it a lot. It is still from the same team: Stephen King (writer, concept or short story), George A. Romero (screenplay), Tom Savini (special effects consultant), and Michael Gornick (director). Gornick was the cinematographer on the original Creepshow (1982). The differences: the wraparound story with young Billy is now more animation than film and there are three segments instead of five; less stories for your money, but the stories here are still very good. It is written, produced, directed, and packaged well, so still feels like part of the Creepshow franchise, unlike the mediocre Creepshow 3 (2006), which had no ties to King or Romero.

Prologue
The wraparound story has young Billy - animated and also played by Domenick John - purchasing his Creepshow comic book and cycling off to the post office to collect a parcel: a bunch of man-eating Venus flytrap bulbs, ordered out of the comic. On his way home, he is chased by the local bullies and this continues between each story until the confrontation at the end.Read more ›
