Ok so going into this I knew it was a low budget and originally intended to go straight to DVD affair, so I did keep my expectations quite low. And I have to say I needn't have bothered. Krampus was a complete blast of a film from start to finish.

Plot:A young boy gives up on the Christmas spirit after his annoying and generally unpleasant cousins come to stay for the holidays and ruin everything. He proceeds to tear up and throw away his letter to Santa and unwittingly unleashes the dark spirit of saint Nicolas (Krampus) Suddenly, the street is engulfed in a horrendous blizzard which cuts all the power and any means of mobility.
Then Krampus unleashes hoards of his minions (killer Jack in the box snakes, psycho ginger bread men and monstrous teddy bears and dolls to name a few) upon the whole street and so the carnage ensues.

First of all, how this was ever considered for a simple straight to DVD release is beyond me,and considering that the film was pitted against big guns like The Hunger games, Star wars, Creed and The Good Dinosaur at the box office, it's made a shed load of cash against it's paltry $15m budget (nearly $60m and counting so far) it's one of the best black comedy films I have seen in ages, the effects, most of which are practical, are really good, the tension and horror, while scattered, is top notch and some of dark humour is just hilarious. Some people complained at the ending which I shant spoil here but I personally thought it was great and really finished off proceedings with a bit of spit and polish.

The monsters in the film are creepy and Krampus himself, while we don't see much of him until near the end, is an excellently overbearing presence and is very well done.

This is an excellent, knowing, christmas-themed comedy horror fairytale, directed by Michael Dougherty.
I think it is one of those very rare films where adults could watch it by themselves but also with their children (although maybe not the very little ones). I really enjoyed it.

-----------Spoilers-------

The sly and beautifully observed comic opening tells you much. In slow motion and to the song; "It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas" we see the "spirit of Christmas" at the local "Mucho-mart", as shoppers pick up a few items.
The Engel family, Dad Tom (Adam Scott from Parks and recreations), Mum
Sarah (Toni Collette), sister Beth and younger brother Max (Emjay Anthony), return home. Playing on the TV is the Alistair Sim version of "Scrooge" (which is quite a nice touch when you compare his "spirit" with what appears later in this film). His German Grandmother is at home baking in the kitchen.

Young Max just wants Christmas to be the way it was, but things have changed; his Dad's work commitments are putting a strain on his parents marriage, his sister Beth is growing up and they are growing apart and then his cousins' family turn up for Christmas and make fun of his belief in Christmas and Santa.

Disillusioned, young Max tears up his "Letter to Santa" wishing for good things for other people and throws it out the window, summoning a blizzard, "Krampus" and his "little helpers", who besiege the house.

The film works very well in a number of ways.

Sleight of hand at the beginning of this ‘festive horror’ suggests that it may be just another Christmas movie about warring family members and culinary disasters, however director Michael Dougherty has instead crafted a movie filled with a sense of impending dread, and one that delivers scares and jumps but also a fair bit of heart. Adam Scott and Toni Collette head a cast of disgruntled extended family members – disillusioned with Christmas and less than happy at having to spend the seasonal period in one another’s’ company, who are gradually isolated and then besieged by all manner of supernatural entities in the forms of traditionally comforting yuletide characters. Possibly not as gripping as it could have been, this is nonetheless worth a look, as an alternative celluloid Christmas experience.

Having watched the trailer for this movie in November 2015, I thought, this looks interesting. A few google searches later, I discovered Kampus' history & the mythology surrounding the character. So naturally, I became really excited for the movie. But come the cinema release date, I was a little heartbroken to find that my local theater would not be screening it :(
So after much debate & conflict, the week before Christmas, I decided to venture out of town to go see it.
I am so glad that I did. What I saw, in my opinion, was one of the best alternative Christmas movies ever!
I wouldn't go so far as to simply label the film "horror". A lot of horror films these days are either wall to wall gore or an assortment of jump scares. This one doesn't really seem like that & that's good. Having read "The Art of Krampus", I can see that it's clearly a blend of Horror, Comedy, Fantasy & of course, Christmas.
Its on par with movies like Gremlins & I can understand why. But they've also taken inspiration from Home Alone & Poltergeist.
Its also got a good deal of practical effects from the people that helped give us The Lord of the Rings & The Hobbit.

All in all, this one is certainly going to become one of my Christmas traditions every year from now on & I would certainly recommend it to others
:)
