400 days is a low budget sci-fi film from the USA, written and directed by Matt Osterman. There are no special effects. In many ways, it reminded me of part low-budget sci-fi, part "The twilight zone", but without the voiceover at the end. It has proper actors and a proper script, even though there are several loose ends not explained and the ending is.....ambiguous.

------major spoilers------

Four potential future astronauts are locked in a pretend space ship, underground, for 400 days to monitor the effects of extended isolation on the team, as a simulation for a real space journey.

The "hero" Captain Theo (Brandon Routh) is bailed out of the drunk tank after a four-day bender on the morning of the start of the experiment, by "Walter" (Grant Bowler) - who seems to be in charge of it all. He was on a bender it seems, because his girlfriend broke up with him. His (ex) girlfriend is also the doctor on the 4 person crew. None of that goes anywhere and felt out of keeping with the rest of the film.

Once sealed in their underground bunker, things gradually start to go awry with the members of the team; the doc gives them drugs (and takes some herself), "Bug" (Ben Feldman) starts drawing a giant maze on his bedroom wall, one starts to hallucinate, communication is lost with the outside world, they feel the capsule "moving". Is any of it real, or all part of an elaborate "simulation". Does the doctor know more than she is letting on? This to me was the first film. I think there was a good psychological drama in there. Unfortunately, this is not pursued.
Instead, someone from the outside breaks in so they all go outside to investigate, which is where it all gets rather "Twilight zone".

I was expecting a bigger production after seeing the names and the picture on front of the box - but don't be fooled as this is a rather low budget production with minimal special effects. Getting through the negatives first; the sets were extraordinarily basic and I couldn't determine if the filmmakers meant to do this on purpose or not. Unfortunately it gave the whole production a rather low-rent feel. And most of the action takes place on the set. But on the plus side, the acting is great and the story is interesting, up to a point. It's one of those films where you are left up in the air and forced to draw your own conclusions. Not a bad effort.
