First let me admit I don't normally watch comedies, especially American comedies, at the cinema; feel they work just as well on TV and are a waste of the cinema experience. However this week there was nothing that I wanted to see that I had not already seen and
so for something to watch I singled out this because of the two leads: Amy Poehler who I enjoyed in 'Parks and Recreation', and Tina Fey that I thought was good in '30 Rock'. Both were just as good in this and the movie over all is very entertaining. The story is very simple, as comedies usually are, but is quite individual in concept, thou at times I was reminded of 'Animal House' and 'Porkies' in the style of humour. Basically we have two sisters, young middle aged, one responsible and down to earth, Amy Poehler, the other more adventurous but a bit of a loser carrier wise, Tina Fey. They learn their parents are selling the family home to down size for their retirement. The sister return home primary to try and change their parents minds but failing that to clear out their belongings. Each sister has plans for the future. When it becomes apparent their parents are going ahead with the sale the sister decide on throwing one last party in the house and that the responsible one will be the reckless one for once while the usual reckless one will adopt the roll of designated party mum to maintain some degree of order. As it's a comedy it's obvious the party is going to get totally out of control and in the mayhem the sister realise they are potentially damaging their plans for their futures. Panic........... The jokes are riskier than they would be for American TV but pretty much standard for British TV and American film comedy, but still very funny.

Let me begin this review of 'Sisters' by saying that I regard its stars, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, as two of the funniest, sassiest women in show biz.
I was hopeful that their talent would shine through in this film, in which two mis-matched sisters decide to throw one last fling in their childhood home when they learn that their parents are moving out.
This could and should have been a great vehicle for its stars, a thoughtful, insightful look at the experiences of growing up and moving on, within the framework of a script which allowed ample scope for Fey and Poehler to display their exceptional comedic talents. As it is, the piece has a slightly juvenile 'party movie' feel to it, with an unfortunate tendency to lurch into slapstick. Not as funny as I'd hoped then, but the powerful chemistry between Fey and Poehler, who clearly love working together after their time on 'Saturday Night Live' in the States, holds things together and keeps the show on the road.

I know that all the critics (and many fans) think "Sisters" is a weak offering from the two mighty comedians. But I quite liked it! Actually, despite being silly a lot of the times and a few cringes, I also laughed a lot! Fey and Poehler have amazing chemistry together and for a lazy evening laugh in a company of your girlfriends this film could be great fun!

Poehler and Fey could be regarded as the female equivalent of Vaughn and Owen about twelve years ago, but with more talent, a better knowledge of comedy, and a better chemistry.

Sisters is your average, run of the mill, pining for lost childhood comedy, which usually equals in lots of middle aged people getting really drunk, bringing up bad blood from their high school days, and lots of pratfalls due to the consumption of narcotics and alcohol.

And there is always a cameo from someone famous, and a supporting role from someone who was really good about fifteen years ago.

Well all the boxes for the above are ticked, but that isn't a bad thing for a film like this, it's exactly the antidote some need for a season that features awards heavy releases almost every week, so sometimes it's nice to be spoon fed a predictable comedy, with some very funny moments thrown in.

The main problem with the film though is the running time, it's twenty minutes too long, and although the main part of the narrative, the party, is sometimes hilarious, there are too many characters introduced, too many sub-plots, and subtle humour makes an early exit halfway through the party, to make way for more visual humour and destruction.

The two leads are great, they have a wonderful chemistry together, and some of the best comedy in the movie comes from just the two of them having a little bit of sisterly banter.

It's not going to be a fondly remembered comedy in years to come, as the house party = destruction of home has been done time and time again, but for something light and humorous, this is affable stuff.

But the best joke is having the film released the same day as Star Wars, that must have been intentional.....

Maura Ellis (Amy Poehler) is the younger and more stable of the two sisters. She is overly helpful to a fault. No seriously, It is a fault. Kate (Tina Fey) the younger sister can't hold a job and is a bad influence for her daughter (Madison Davenport) who is more adult than her. When their parents sell their home the film turns into a high school reunion film with the sisters taking on opposite roles for the night...that is a high school reunion plus hot Asian chicks which are in vogue right now.

I admit I had many laugh out loud moments in a comedy that also had a lot of misses. The crude humor made me think this was a teen sex comedy for middle aged women. Not as good as "Bridesmaids" but if you liked that film, you should smile at this one.

Guide: Plenty of swearing. No nudity. Samantha Bee in a sex scene, sort of.
