Product Description

Johnny Deep portrays real-life serial killer James 'Whitey' Bulger in this biographical crime drama. It's 1975 and Winter Hill Gang leader Whitey's hold over South Boston is threatened by the Angiulo Brothers of the Italian-American Mafia. In order to bring down his opposition and protect himself and his family Whitey agrees to turn informant against the Angiulo Brothers at the request of FBI agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton), a friend of Whitey and his brother Billy (Benedict Cumberbatch), the President of the Massachusetts Senate. However, Whitey uses his connection with the agent as a cover for committing murder and Connolly's control over his informant is scrutinised by his boss Charles McGuire (Kevin Bacon) and prosecutor Fred Wyshak (Corey Stoll). Soon Whitey is left with no choice but to go on the run... The cast also features Jesse Plemons, Peter Sarsgaard, Dakota Johnson and Julianne Nicholson.

Having read most of the books written about notorious Irish-American gangster James "Whitey" Bulger and his associates this movie on his life and Boston crime world was mediocre and incomplete
My issues with the movie:

The intra-Irish civil war that Bulger emerged as the head criminal in South Boston after he was released from Alcatraz is completely left out, (a more interesting subject than the made up problem with the Italian Mafia he actually co-existed with peacefully).

His drug operation isn't explained or shown, some of the more interesting side kicks were his dealers i.e John 'red' Shea,'Polecat' Moore, ect.

Legendary criminal Pat Nee isn't even a character in the movie and he was/is probably the second most important Boston-Irish criminal of the time and a former Winter Hill associate of Bulger's and 'friend'.

The racism of Boston at the time isn't shown even though the 'Bussing Riots' where in the trailer,(I've heard the first cut was 3 hours and maybe when they edited it details like this were lost) Some of the nastier allegations against Bulger have been left out, i.e. selling out his own and his 'love life' whilst his humanity is played up (his grief over his mother and son's deaths).

His partner Steven Flemmi is portrayed as an innocent when he was equal to Bulger and an informer before him.

I could go on but you get the point.

Bottom line - OK movie, terrible bio-pic.

Harrowing is a term I might use for this film. I read the book 'Black Mass' by Dick Lehr and Gerald O'Neill, and that book gave us a history of James Bulger and his life in Southie. This film brings that book to life, with music that seems to match every scene, and we go on the descent of crime of Bulger and his gang. The addition of the FBI agent Connolly, who broke every rule legal and moral, adds to the blackness of this piece of history.

Bulger came from a family of 8 children. They lived in Southie, went to work at a young age, James was always in trouble, his older brother Billy, the good one, the smart one, became a Senator and was very powerful in Boston. We meet early on two people who help James, enabling him, his brother William "Billy" Bulger, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, and his friend turned FBI agent James Connolly, played by Joel Edgerton. Connolly plays the FBI while he is helping Bulger. Bulger became an FBI informant, and true he did give up the Italian Mafia, but that was it, and in the interim killed and went about his crimes, all the while protected by the FBI. In return Connolly gave Bulger names of those who were after him. Connolly received gifts and money. We meet Bulger's gang, Jesse Plemons, who plays Weeks, Cochran who plays Steve Flemmi, and the rest, some made it out alive, many did not. You never crossed Bulger, he would kill you for any little slight. All of the actors are superb, and I read that Johnny Depp who plays Bulger, considers this role his favorite. The piercing blue eyes of Bulger share the menace that lies within.

Some of the characters are unforgettable, the murders for hire, the women who loved the wrong man or said the wrong thing to the police.

'Black Mass' stars Johnny Depp as 'real life' South Boston gangster Whitey Bulger, a psycho who makes a deal with a school friend turned FBI agent (Joel Edgerton). In return for information leading to the taking down of heavy duty mobsters, the Feds will 'go easy' on Bulger and his rackets. Needless to say, this 'win win' situation for both parties is destined to end in tears as Bulger takes his opportunity to become a big player, and Edgerton's Agent Connally begins to become compromised...
'Black Mass' has a bit of an identity problem. It would like to be a Martin Scorsese film but it isn't. It may have the look of Scorsese, but lacks the heart and soul for it. Everything about the film, the acting, the script, the photography, the direction, is competent, but never more than that. It lacks originality or an edge, it lacks the inspired touch of 'Goodfellas' or 'The Departed', of Scorsese at his best. Another difficulty is that it is impossible to empathise with any of the pretty unlikeable characters on screen, a danger for a film seeking to hold the attention of an audience which doesn't feel a vested interest in the fate of the participants. Worst of all, we've seen it all many times before; there's a real 'been there, done that, bought the tee shirt' feel about this effort.
To summarise, this is a watchable but eminently forgettable piece of work, and one which, I think, will only be really relished by die hard Depp fans.

This Boston set crime drama does indeed take you into the dark side of human behaviour. Bolstered by an incredibly good ensemble of actors, Depp is unrecognisable as James 'Whitey' Bulger. His portrayal is genuinely frightening, he radiates an unsettling aura of a man for whom violence is a currency he is all too willing to trade. As his bonds with humanity diminish one by one, so his capacity for killing increases. Bulger is not just some thug however. His combination of street smarts and his ability to use those around him elevates him to untouchable crime lord. This film looks beyond the central character and scores on several levels with how those around Bulger act (or react). Joel Edgerton is all to human as he slides into corruption as FBI agent John Connolly, Rory Cochran as Flemmi looks weary and sad as he witnesses yet another savage murder. There's nothing stylish about the deaths in this film. They are just ugly and brutal like a road accident.
Crime does not pay here. The sentimental bonds of childhood friendship are corroded away by the toxic evil that this life generates, leaving only victims and damage. Dark and disturbing yes, but above all a fascinating story of the margins of life few dare to dwell in.
