What a wonderful tribute to Peter de Rome this is: a 96-minute documentary in which he talks about his life in a series of interviews conducted in Sandwich, Kent, and New York. It documents his schooldays, going to America somewhat by chance, working for Paramount Pictures and also at Tiffany's, and starting to make gay porn films of which quite large excerpts are played. However people who see this will need to get The Erotic Films of Peter de Rome to be able to see these films properly. Watching the clips reminds you how fantastic they really are; erotic rather than porn, they are visual celebrations of gay feeling, shot in the 60s and 70s, very imaginative, and often featuring black actors. De Rome is delightful in interview, he is so laid-back and free of hang-ups about sex. You might expect him to be more nervous given all the risks he took to get his films developed, adding something anodyne at the beginning and end of the reel in the hope that the developer wouldn't look too closely. Thanks to this ruse, and the enterprise of the BFI, who are now the custodians of a number of his films - the first time they have done this for a director of porn films, in effect - these magical short films are now available. The documentary was made towards the end of his life; he died just before his 90th birthday. It's really impressive that the BFI have championed him like this - if only Adam and Yves could follow it ... His filmmaking is unique, really, combining an unbridled sexual explicitness with stories of real charm and a certain visual poetry. They are often based on brilliant, highly original ideas, making them a unique mixture.Read more ›

This great documentary managed to get Peter De Rome just prior to his death in 2014. He worked in the film industry for most of his life having worked with the likes of Alexander Korda and David O Selznick. He started making gay erotica for his own use and to share with close friends. However his eye for the art of film making made his films more interesting than the ‘wham bam thank you mam’ kind of offerings.

In the film he is interviewed and is very open about his past life and recalls with warmth his past lovers and friends and is genuinely honoured by the resurgence of interest in his films.

The film contains excerpts from many of his films and it is easy to see why they became popular. They have the requisite sex content in most but there is always a narrative and are inventive and ‘arty’ but in a very good way. This seems like a great testament to his work and I hope interest lasts for many years in his work.
