"The Hallow", created and directed by Corin Hardy, is a classic in the making. It's a great modern horror film that builds and twists and never lets up. It already feels like it comfortably belongs amongst classics like John Carpenters "The Thing", "The Fly", or more modern great horror films like "The Descent". Great cinematography, beautifully shot in such an amazing location. If horror is your thing, you should definitely check it out

I love scary haunted forests, creepy old houses and something lurking in the shadows. This film has all of these ingredients. A dark, pervading menace keeps up the tension and the heart-rate. The family have no idea what they are in for in this seemingly tranquil spot - although the locals aren't particularly welcoming or friendly. Soon, though, they face an evil far greater and more deadly than they could ever have imagined.

I do like this movie involving Irish folklore, and the subject of 'changelings', which does make a nice change (pun intended!) from the usual 'family in peril' genre. Quite spooky, atmospheric and tense. Sometimes, less is more; the scene where the family dog just stares into the dark woods and growls low in its throat is genuinely creepy. There are some excellent effects for a relatively low-budget film - which, in places, reminded me of Splinter? The 'creatures' are well portrayed and darkly realised.
My only critique is the couples' 'baby' - in some scenes you just know it is only a bundle in a cloth & it does kind of let the visual aspect of the film down somewhat. The soundtrack is low-key as well, which makes a change from the usual strident accompaniment. (I liked the scene where the husband is viewing slides & there is a cool dub reggae playing in the background . . . !
This film, in my opinion, is well worth the outlay; a fine example of a genre movie to add to any collection.

I was surprised by this. You can normally tell a horror film a mile off by the classic 'nothing could be better with this family, it's all going well and then...it all goes wrong'. This film doesn't go too far away from the usual formula, but it does a few interesting things. It's also beautifully filmed. Recommended.

... Why do I have to get the blu ray for a British film from Germany as it's not being released in the UK? This has happened with several films recently and it bugs me!

PLOT...
When a conservationist is sent to Ireland with his wife and infant son to survey an area of forest believed to be hallowed ground by the superstitious locals, his actions unwittingly disturb a dark twisted fairy-tale that soon becomes real, when it gets dark the creatures of the darkness prey upon them and they must do anything to try and fight back!!

This yet again is not your average straight to DVD low budget trashy horror, its actually rather exciting! A very well made monster horror that's certainly one of the best of the year so far, it has a great budget that has been spent very well by a good team who clearly love old school horror, the effects in the movie are almost all good old fashioned practical effects with great monster designs, the movie keeps are dark tone throughout, starts as a slightly slow builder then get stuck straight into the scares and we get revealed more and more as the movie goes on and the finale is very old school monster horror, loved every bit of this movie, great cast and soundtrack too, its certainly something worth going back to a few times too, I think maybe the DVD art don't do the movie any justice really its a bit lame but believe the quotes on the front, this is a great horror worth checking out.

DVD Has a pretty decent picture (eOne release, why no Blu-ray for this one?)
Good special features including a 48-min making of, behind the scenes, gallery, trailer.
Region 2 DVD, 93-mins, 2015.
Comes with slipcase.
English language, English subtitles SDH.

I saw The Hallow twice at the cinema and loved it both times. I have been a fan of horror films since I was a kid and this stands up with some of the classic films I have always loved. It is creepy and outright scary at times and has monsters that Stan Winston would have been proud of!

I won't spoil any storylines here but it has little elements of Evil Dead, Alien, Straw Dogs and The Hills have Eyes (amongst others) but without being derivative. It shows how much director Corin Hardy loves the genre and he has deftly managed to carve his own niche with The Hallow, whilst paying homage to the classics. They wouldn't be classics if they weren't great films, after all!

I mentioned the monsters above and the special effects truly are amazing. A lot of the effects are practical and in-camera and that makes a real difference and adds to the scares. When you can believe a creature is actually chasing or looming over the main characters, you genuinely feel a sense of threat and become scared for them. The cinematography is amazing too, using light and shadow to hide and reveal the creatures (particularly in the first half of the film) and make you wonder if you saw something in the background - sometimes you did and sometimes you didn't. Repeated viewings are very much recommended!!

Joseph Mawle and Bojana Novakovic are both great as the two leads and Michael McElhatton and Michael Smiley provide really strong supporting roles (so strong, you wish they were in it for longer!!). There is also the main character's baby, which is a mixture of a real baby, animatronics and CG and I challenge anyone to tell the difference. As a parent myself, having a small baby in the film really piles more tension onto an already pretty creepy/tense experience.

Totally recommended as a really great film that also happens to be an awesome horror film.

Looking forward to getting it on DVD and sharing it with more people!
