Product Description

Everyone knows the classic American horror titles: Night of the Living Dead, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and A Nightmare on Elm Street, to name but a few. But we want to tell you a different story a story of the unsung heroes of American terror... Whether it s a film that has languished in obscurity, or a movie that s at risk of being lost due to lack of source materials, American Horror Project is here to ensure that these unique slices of the American Nightmare are brought back into the public consciousness and preserved for all to enjoy.

Volume I of this series presents three tales of violence and madness from the 1970s. Malatesta s Carnival of Blood (Christopher Speeth, 1973) sees a family arrive at a creepy, dilapidated fairground in search of their missing daughter, only to find themselves at the mercy of cannibalistic ghouls lurking beneath the park. Meanwhile, The Witch Who Came from the Sea (Matt Cimber, 1976), stars Mollie Perkins (The Diary of Anne Frank) as a young woman whose bizarre and violent fantasies start to bleed into reality literally. Lastly, every parent s worst nightmare comes true in The Premonition (Robert Allen Schnitzer, 1976), a tale of psychic terror in which five-year-old Janie is snatched away by a strange woman claiming to be her long-lost mother.

Newly remastered from the best surviving elements and contextualised with brand new supplementary material, with American Horror Project we can re-evaluate an alternative history of American horror and film heritage.

Being banned here in the UK in 1984 under the Video Recordings Act and being placed on the infmous 'Video Nasties' list it seems unfair that this film has langusied in obsurity for so long. Only relesed on DVD last year in the US and still (of this writing) unavalibe in the UK it really is a shame that this film remains unknown.
The film tells the story of Molly, and woman who fantazies over body-buliders,football stars and TV celebrities who's fanatsies turn violent, especialy with the use of razor-blades on a certain part of the male anatomy! But when bodies are found castrated and murdered are they simply just fantasies?
It does have have much in common with Roman Polanski's 'Repulison', and there is some extremely distubing flashbacks to Molly's abused childhood at the hands of her sea-faring father (something she has blanked from her mind)which is at the root of her pychosis.
Not as violent or shocking as it would be believed by it's censorship history, the film does feel a little dated in a early seventies way (despite the year of it being made listed as 1976?). It's the performances that as the real winner here, there is no over-acting here with the exception of a sequence where a starlet shoots up the car of her cheating lover (don't ask!)
Certainly it's a curiosity, but one well worth a look if you like horror movies or thrillers with a psychological aproach or simiply just viewed as an off-beat movie, it's well worth a look.

I don't particularly classify two of the movies (The Witch Who Came From the Sea and The Premonition) in this set as horror; they strike me rather as dark dramas, so die-hard horror fans who are expecting a high gore quotient here may be disappointed. However, that should not take away from Arrow's admirable attempt to bring to light obscure movies to a new audience.

Malatesta's Carnival of Blood does fit comfortably into the horror bracket, and while lacking a coherent script and any sort of budget, it is a terrific example of creating something out of very little. It scores highly on atmosphere and plays out like some demented nightmare as it details the sinister goings-on in the eponymous funfair.

The Witch is the real Jewel in the crown: a vividly directed, very well acted account of a fragile character's descent into madness and murder as her past incestuous abuse at the hands of her father is manifested in gruesome acts against the new, idealised men who enter her life. A superb performance by Millie Perkins is well served by Matt Cimber's sensitive direction. This one is well worth catching up with.

Unfortunately, the same can't be said for The Premonition, a rather inconsequential parapsychology drama which even the presence of the terrific Richard Lynch and Jeff Corey can't redeem. It's not an awful film, just not particularly memorable.

Still, two out of three ain't bad and I would commend this set to anyone with even a passing interest in 70s US cinema.

[[ASIN:B017O3GAD6 American Horror Project Vol 1 [Dual Format Blu-Ray + DVD] An admirable effort from Arrow to bring these little-seen 70's films to the viewing public, however truth be said the quality of the films is a mixed bag. Maletesta's Carnival Of Blood is a zero budget, badly edited ,acted and at times incoherent mess helped by some nice imagery...features Tattoo from Fantasy Island in an early role. The Witch Who Came From The Sea is helped by a great performance from Millie Perkins in the lead role and though rather slow is well-made and interesting,Originally on the UK's video nasty list there's nothing bar a couple of admittedly uncomfortable sequences that would trouble the censors nowadays. The third film in the set,The Premonition has the reliable Richard Lynch in a featured role but i found the film rather plodding and uninteresting. The set is brilliantly put together and has an excellent booklet included. These films are certainly not for everyone, even horror fans but may be worth it if you fancy something away from the norm.

Having seen this film on the video nasties list I was slightly dubious about watching it as the majority of those films are either overrated or extremely dull (With the exception of a few truly great ones! And I'm sure you know which ones I mean.) However, I was really impressed with this film. It's a suprisingly well made and original piece of shock cinema. I don't really see this as horror, despite there being a few fairly horrific moments and a downbeat feel throughout. Anyhow, I highly recommend this one to anyone who enjoys 70's exploitation, horror or just plain weird films. Millie Perkins is exceptional and all in all I'd say this deserves a bit of time as its a very underrated film. And a very strange one at that.

Molly who was sexually abused by father as a young child, starts losing her grip on reality and commits several murders.

A very strange offbeat psychological drama not a horror as the cover/title and films reputation would have you believe. Millie Perkins gives a terrific performance as Molly, from the very beginning she gives her a real edge with a haunting look and at times a real vulnerability then suddenly a sharp turn into violence. Others in the film are good but never reach Perkins level. Seasoned director Cimber takes the viewer on a journey throughout the film, from Molly's slips into madness to some near art-house scenes near the end of the film, with some skill, although his direction and some of the writing has it's issues, the plot does tend to wonder and fall into some I felt a little pointless chatter. This was put onto the video nasty list in 1984 however there is only 1 real violent scene where Molly cuts her lover with a razor in the bathroom, there is another scene at the beginning where she castrates a man but you see nothing graphic or violent it's all done off screen. There are some shocking parts though when Molly's father is sexually abusing her in flashback scenes, this also could explain its presence on the list.

Overall a competent film that never deserved any of the attention it got, Perkins is the standout aspect and probably the reason to see the film just don't look at the misleading cover and expect a horror movie you'll be bitterly disappointed.
