Product Description

Product Description

Featuring in his final film, White Heat star Steve Cochran plays a world-weary, out-of-work pilot who accepts an offer of work in Mozambique and soon finds himself immersed in a world of drug smuggling and white slavery!

Thrills, excitement and exotic locations add up to compulsive viewing in this Anglo-German adventure from the mid-1960s. Produced by B-movie meister and cult favourite Harry Alan Towers and scripted by noted screenwriter, playwright and novelist Peter Yeldham, Mozambique is presented in a brand-new transfer from original film elements in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio.

---------spoiler alert------------
Blacklisted pilot, Brad Webster (Steve Cochran) ends up in Mozambique, working as a bush pilot for baddie Da Silva (Martin Benson), in this 1960s B-movie. Further nefarious flavour is added by the mysterious Henderson (Dietmar Shönherr). Webster finds himself flying clandestine missions (for some reason), aiding Da Silva and Henderson, and uncovering, and foiling, a web of murder and intrigue along the way.

The baddies (Schönherr and Benson) are quite good, to be honest, but Cochran is just too old by this point in his career, to be the leading action-man lead. (Think Roger Moore as Bond in; A View to a Kill, when he was 58! Although to be fair, Cochran is still a touch under fifty here). And the Bond analogy holds in a wider context; this is a 60s Bond-wannabe, but without the charismatic lead, crisp dialogue and wit. (There's even a killer dwarf in this one, so think; "The Man with the Golden Gun" if you want to push it a bit!). Also, there is just no chemistry between Cochran and (too young) love interest, Vivi Bach. Although richly filmed on location in the eponymous country and beyond, it feels a bit by the numbers........Victoria Falls, for the final, grand, show-down, anyone? (Hitchcock should have sued for copyright infringement!)

Yes, I know it is "only" a B- movie, but that is not automatically synonymous with a lack of depth, energy and style. Unfortunately, I think this one lacks all of those. It is the worst possible thing a B-movie can be in my view; boring. It's not bad, just...boring. (Apart from the most unconvincing bar-brawl in film history, outside a Chaplin film, surely!). It is a sad film swan-song for Cochran, who died just a few months later in an accident while on holiday.
