Another box-office flop on its release apparently, but Vin Diesel as a gravelly-voiced immortal witch-hunter? What’s not to like! I wasn’t going to bother with this, as I imagined it to be of the same ilk as recent fantasy epic Seventh Son – which was pretty shocking to be honest. However I’m glad I did, because Diesel’s understated humour; along with his chemistry with Rose Leslie’s ‘good witch’ Chloe; combined with some gruesomely impressive SFX, and good support from the likes of Michael Caine, Elijah Wood, and Olafur Darri Olafsson, made this a daft but entertaining fantasy action movie. Don’t believe the un-hype.

During the Great Plague Kaulder (Vin Diesel) and company go after the Witch Queen (Julie Engelbrecht) in order to kill her and break the curse. Kaulder in turn gets the "curse of immortality." We then switch to modern times where Kaulder is an infamous witch hunter known as "The Weapon." He works with a group of priests known as the "Axe and Cross." They have a fragile truce with the witch's council. Kaulder has a handler with the title Dolan. When Dolan 36 (Michael Caine) retires and suddenly dies, Kaulder suspects "dark magic beyond evil."

The film didn't have enough display as to the magic types and rules. We are told that the magic is elemental, but most of what we saw deviated from that. With vampires, we know the rules. With witches, things must be developed if you are going to have a whole underground culture. The film had some good scenes and lines, but relied on long dragged out special effects to sell itself. Vin Diesel is always good in these roles and he didn't disappoint.

Guide: Filmed in Pittsburgh (I couldn't figure out the city from the skyline). No sex or nudity. I remember 1 bitch. Not much in swearing as I recall.

Many, Many years ago a great warrior 'Kaulder' (Vin Diesel) vanquished the all-powerful 'Witch Queen' (Julie Engelbrecht)
however before she died she cursed the warrior with immortality.
Though he'll walk through the centuries to come he'll always morn for those he'd lost in the past.
Now, all these years later in New York the Witch Queen is resurrected to threaten the whole of mankind, 'Kaulder' must
re-face his old-enemy but will need help against the power that she wields.
'Kaulder' turns to his mortal companions 'Dolan' 36th (Michael Caine) 'Dolan 37th (Elijah Wood) and 'Chloe' (Rose Leslie)
to combat the vengeful 'Witch Queen'....'Chloe' will become his closest ally in the field.
A dark and intense battle between them will ensue, is 'Dolan 37' equal to the challenge can he be relied upon ? - failure to
defeat the threat would leave humanity at her mercy
A DARK action-packed and enjoyable Fantasy Movie filled with ancient magic and witchcraft that will keep you spellbound
for sure.
The film includes an interesting and star-studded cast line-up.

I'd probably give it a 4 and a 1/2, but since I can't, I'm giving it a 5. It's definitely better than JUST a 4, for me. The Last Witch Hunter is surprisingly good, and has far more to it than I expected, considering the dreadful reviews I'd read elsewhere. It's an excellent fantasy film, with some interesting characters. Vin actually does rather well, especially when partnered with Michael Caine, and Rose Leslie also makes for a very nice leading lady. She's quite capable in her own right, as a character, but the actress herself is attractive without being a 'perfect super model', which makes a change. As for the main villain, she is appropriately nasty and looks great, with some superb (physical, not CG!) makeup (You'll be surprised what she really looks like, if you watch the making-of!).

It strikes the right balance between character, adventure and story, so that it never feels as though you're being skimped on any particular aspect. On the other hand, it introduces a world that could quite easily be expanded on, if the planned sequel ever gets made (probably not, given the box-office, but it's possible). If I had one complaint, **POSSIBLE SPOILER** it would be that the villain required more than one or two followers trying to bring about her return. It needed to feel as though a larger group were waiting in the shadows. That's a minor complaint, though.

The film also has a great score by Steve 'Transformers' Jablonsky, that doesn't sound too much like his previous work. It's got a couple of nice themes going on, and has some effective softer moments in addition to the action.

I can honestly say I thoroughly enjoyed The Last Witch Hunter, which had a bit of depth to its characters and story, unlike so many of the vacuous superhero movies being churned out at the moment.

This film does have its problems such as character development and the finale fight with the antagonist but what we got instead is still a good film with exciting lore and interesting characters. Hopefully they will fix the issues in the sequel.
