Product Description

It gave me the confidence I never had I felt like a porn star.

Chemsex: the name given to the rising phenomenon which refers to the use of drugs in a sexual context. Often referring to group sex that can last for days, the allure of chemsex has lead to many young men being trapped in a vicious circle of sex, addiction and dependence.

This powerful and potent film tells the stories of gay men whose lives have been affected by the crisis; from self-confessed slammers to sexual health workers, from those who deny there s a problem to those who got out alive . Offering unprecedented access, Chemsex is a brave and unflinching journey into the dark underworld of modern, urban gay life.

Fascinating documentary about a world many of us are blissfully unaware of.

Documentaries should illuminate and entertain; "Chemsex" does both. Directors William Fairman and Max Gogarty skillfully guide us through the world of chemsex, describing this phenomenon through various interviewees from various backgrounds. It makes for grim viewing (not to mention a nihilistic footnote to films like "How To Survive A Plague").

Some will be horrified, some will be titillated. Sex sells, but it leaves a hell of a mess.

For over 40 years i lived a fairly moral life free from even cigarettes or alcohol. Despite all appearances though I was not happy and the film highlights the inner turmoil and shame etc felt by many gay men, Chemsex made me feel part of a community that felt at that moment in time incredibly real. On chems esp tina I would often ask 'you do love me, don't you?' - therein lies what I really desperately wanted. I have seen and experienced the worst even being airlifted to hospital and in a long term coma. I still struggle even now. I hope this film helps. I applaud the work of the new outreach programme as it seems to be holistic in its approach,

Three of us watched the film: gay men, well versed in urban gay living, aged 30s-50s.

If you know next to nothing about chemsex then this film may have shock value while 'the concerned gay man' can pat themselves on the back for watching. But, if you're into chemsex it's unlikely to be at the top of your watch list. So ultimately we were left questioning who the film is for.

While we are told that chemsex is a serious health issue, a back-story to its evolution, a broader spectrum of professional comment and some well placed comparative statistics would have added weight to this assertion. Also we felt it was disingenuous not to at least mention other organisations like Antidote, Club Drug Clinic and Burrell Street Clinic (in London) who are all pioneers doing excellent work in this emerging field.

We wondered how much added to the narrative and how much bordered on voyeurism, but the interwoven personal stories are very powerful and easy to follow, and the chemsex sessions (filmed on the hoof) don't hold back. While the final scene brought people's stories up to date nicely, the film rather fizzled out and at a total of one hour and 20 minutes it was just too much of the same. Ultimately this film is a valiant and heartfelt attempt to address a difficult issue which may have missed its mark, although this is not a reason not to see it.

I know a few gay men who are into the scene of so called ‘chemsex’ and they have absolutely no issues with it what so ever. This film highlights the stories of a number of gay men who have had extreme experiences whilst taking a variety of drugs in order to loosen inhibitions and thereby get more or have better and longer lasting sex.

The stories to camera are often extremely moving as most of the men suffer with the dual addiction of the cravings for the drug and more importantly the feeling that they are having the best sex ever whilst intoxicated. One man says ‘if I have to spend the rest of my life sober then euthanize me now’. There in lies the rub. The problems come with the added risk of STI’s via the sharing of needles and unprotected sex – especially with strangers in back rooms, saunas etc. There are scenes of actual sex in this film too and nudity.

Now this also features the work of an outreach programme located at 56 Dean Street in London’s Soho and its commendable work. It is not the only programme though and there are a lot of people that can offer help. This could have been emphasised more in the film. Also it chose to tell the dark stories – we do not have anyone who is a recreational user and manages to get by having a fulfilled life etc which may have added balance. We all get that ‘drugs are bad umkay’.

That said I am not condoning drug taking but I also do not want to denigrate a chosen life style if done in a safe and moderate way. Ultimately this is an engaging film that does have its heart in the right place and if it can help prevent men from having such calamitous and life changing experiences then it is all for the good. This is a good one to get for a rental – recommended.

Brace yourself. ‘Chemsex’ is a shocking investigation into London’s growing gay chemsex scene, where an orgasm must be accompanied by crystal meth, Ketamine or GHB. The dating app Grindr seems to play a significant role, with drug-coded invitations. Grim scenes of men shooting up, before orgies or parties, are interspersed with heavy-duty confessions from addicts. Some men are even intentionally becoming HIV positive by having un-condomed sex. The film focuses on the gay community’s response to the crisis and the testimony of the NHS sexual health worker whose clinic in Soho’s Dean Street is pioneering work in this healthcare emergency. 4 stars.

I first came across Chemsex when I learnt that a a former committee member of an organisation I am a member off had been diagnosed HIV+ and that after the break up of a relationship he had been introduced to the Chemsex scene and his current health status was a direct result of it. Not sure what Chemsex was I found the documentary very informative being totally unaware of the sub culture so prevalent in the GBLT community at large. A harrowing film watch, but I hope it will help get the message out into the community of the risks users could be running with their health etc.
