I read all the books and watched this film 3 times and I get frustrated when people criticise it! I was worried that it would become a cheap type of movie without any class but the director has done an amazing job, especially that the first book is full of Anastasia vs Christian encounters. I hope that people will realise after watching the 2nd part that this is an amazing love story. I think that the cast was brilliant. Dakota had such a challenging role (somehow it is still acceptable for a man to run naked in front of a camera but a woman will be judged straight away). If you are looking for a romantic story then I would highly recommend this movie. There is less sex content than you would expect, based on opinions of other people, and the few erotic moments have been done very tastefully. This movie is a great example of how true love can change a human being and how beautiful it is to experience it. It also shows that love is not easy and that nobody is perfect but there are feelings worth fighting for so don't run away when it gets hard!

1) Men have been buying Playboy and watching porn for ages. Women have never had anything which would uncover their desires (I'm talking about classy women) or at least put what they already know to a test. We love being wanted and treated special so yes, some of the qualities Christian has got are like a dream... As a man, you don't have to be super rich to surprise a woman, to release butterflies in her stomach, but unfortunately many don't do it often enough. There is nothing wrong about being adventurous in the bedroom.

2) The language in the books may not be the best but maybe that's why it appeals to everyone, whatever your background or education. The movie has a great dialogue and is a really pleasant to watch.

As a big romance movie fan, I really enjoyed this movie. I agree with some of the other reviews posted that less is more and if you are wanting to buy this expecting to see lots of graphic sex scenes then you are buying the wrong movie and should be looking to the XXX rated movie shelf. I have read the books and yes there is a lot of explicit sex content but under the care of the director Sam Taylor-Johnson, she has created a very tasteful movie that does give a more subtle indicator of Christian Grey's sexual preferences. Put aside the sexual content of the books as the essential story is two people navigating their way through what they feel love is, having never experienced it before, which was beautifully illustrated on screen. I am glad that Sam Taylor-Johnson stuck to her guns and directed the movie the way she saw the story to be, rather than letting the author walk all over her with her vision which probably would have involved more sex. I hope the next director, if the sequels definitely go ahead, follows the same way of the first one. Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan fit the roles of Anatasia and Christian very well.

Tastes of movies obviously differ if the movie Fifty Shades of Grey received so many bad reviews. I guess people really did expect to see some hardcore porn (absolute control and screaming pain) judging by the reviews saying that the sex was too little and too tame.
I never read the books , I only went to see the movie. So I guess if the book was as explicit and pornographic as people say, it is understandable that people that are into those kind of books are disappointed by the movie, which is everything BUT pornography! It is quite a serious movie with deep meaning. If you expect a violent S&M porn and instead get a serious-themed movie about the psychology of humans and what attracts us to one another. Our weaknesses and strengths in relationships and how vulnerable we are when we are in love- coupled with the deep effects trauma can have on the way we act and feel, I can see how you can be disappointed. I, on the other hand, was so happy that the wonderful director made such a great movie out of that book and thankfully saw way beyond the S&M. I can honestly say that it is the best movie I have seen in a long time. Maybe even since Pretty Woman and Titanic.
What do I like about the movie? First the basics: photography, light, music, set, location are all great and create an amazing atmosphere through the picture. The way the sex scenes are depicted is a work of art; classy, erotic and romantic (all which a porn is NOT!)
The plot: very deep too especially if you are able to look beyond the S&M (which sadly many people don’t want to do). Just imagine you are a normal middle class girl and then the most famous, richest good looking guy in town takes interest in you.

I rented this because I wanted to watch with an open mind - ignore the hype, hysterics, criticism etc, and just judge it on its own merits as a film. I set aside all my prejudices and just watched. Bear in mind I'm not some high-minded viewer. I may be the wrong gender and demographic for 50 shades but I'm happy to watch anything. GI Joe, Fast and The Furious, romantic weepies with Channing Tatum, carry on films. I even watched "Love Actually" and thought it was OK.

I am a low bar - I liked Sharknado II

However, nothing could have prepared me for such an unbearable and insultingly bad film. The awful sex scenes at least represented a respite from the horrible dialogue, and the BDSM element didn't come into it. This is just a shockingly bad film.

The narrative is disjointed and awkward. Ana steps in for her friend to interview Edward Cullen, sorry, Christian Grey, then he appears at the hardware store where she works to buy some suspiciously bondagey gear. Ana is all contrived innocence, doe eyes, awkward, clumsy, beautiful (of course) and well-chewed lower lip (she must bite her lower lip about 464 times in the film). Christian looks perpetually constipated, and poor old Jamie Dornan has to deliver some of the worst lines in cinema history. Those who know him well say he has no heart.....those poor actors.

Christian develops an obsession for the innocent Ana and improbably, after some truly awful family scenes, they get together, after Christian has spilled the beans on his dark secret. He doesn't do romance and has singular tastes. It was very difficult not to laugh out loud at Christian's office, his apartment, his piano playing and his helicopter. The business meeting where they discussed the contract was risible.
