This game has been harshly treated by many critics, and the only other review on Amazon at the time of writing is a one-star annihilation, so I felt compelled to post some brief comments about my experience of the game. I’m not just deluded because of the lack of choice on Wii U – I am genuinely enjoying The Maiden of Black Water.

I’ve never played a Project Zero (AKA Fatal Frame) game before, so I’m coming in cold. However, I did enjoy the early Resident Evil games, and I found Black Water’s deliberate slowness appealing. You walk slowly. You run slowly. You turn slowly. And the story – involving a haunted mountain which seems to draw young people to watery suicide – is revealed slowly.

The actual gameplay involves you playing one of two characters, depending on the episode (of which there are 13). The main hero is a psychic apprentice named Yuri. Armed only with a “Camera Obscura”, she visits the mountain to uncover the mystery behind various disappearances. She does this by using a “token” to sense the person’s spectral trail.

Along the way you encounter aggressive ghosts, which you must destroy by photographing them and stealing their soul. The Gamepad can be held aloft and used literally like a camera, although I found this a bit awkward – thankfully you can simply switch to stick controls in the menu. You can still tilt the pad to capture the most effective (i.e. most damaging) shot.

The camera can be upgraded with different lens and film types. These are bought with points (which you get for quickly snapping wandering ghosts) or by picking them up. Picking stuff up is a mini-game in itself – it’s silly, but then much of the game is silly.

I ve been a gamer since twenty sth years ago and Id like to believe that I can be objective regarding whether or not a game is good. After reading all the reviews from various websites I started to have second thoughts about buying this yet I could not resist it due to its neat packaging and the fact that it carries the project zero name which is a very respected horror franchise. As expected the reviewers bashed another good game for absolutely no reason (and we dont get that many lately- what we usually get is well polished games deprived of gameplay value)... This game has a very interesting story, the graphics are top notch (for wii u standards), ghost animation is amazing and for the first time after a while it feels like the wii u gamepad has found a purpose... The only drawback appears when running and turning around- this is when controls can get a bit clunky. Im 100% positive survival horror fans (of the ps1-ps2 era) and older gamers will appreciate this! Thanks for reading!

Purchased it through Amazon Spain for £43 and playing the game as of right now, totally awesome. While this is my first Fatal Fram-- I mean, Project Zero game (I prefer the title Fatal Frame, to be honest) it feels so welcoming for newcomers to take part in the game and as such, the gameplay controls are quite easy to learn as well as that the GamePad is given great use as not only for a map (extremely useful) but also as a camera (you need to look at it most of the time to kill the enemies properly or you'll be shooting for ages). With that said, I'm glad that there's finally a game which I'm satisfied to use the GamePad instead of any alternate controllers (though the Western edition is only playable with the GamePad unlike the Japanese which supports a ton -- I have no idea what the others do though I'm interested).

Do I find this game to be Creepy Sexy or just Creepy? Both. Just recently I was reading a note in the game where it mentioned about "postmortem photos" and being the curious cat that I am I couldn't resist looking it up on Google and safe to say I won't be doing it ever again, creepy and disturbing. In regards to "Creepy Sexy" there are ghosts who look sexy as hell with their cleavage being shown as well as the female characters get their clothes all wet so it's all in all hard to not stare at it despite that it's all just pixels (I'm not even going to get into the debacle that Nintendo censored the game because the two Nintendo costumes are even more fanservice-y, especially ZSS's).

Lastly, I've to say that the graphics and music department is all absolutely fantastic. This definitely looks and feels like what a next-gen game should be for me (it also gave me a classic Resident Evil vibe).

P.S. Can't wait for December to arrive so I'll receive my Xenoblade X Limited Edition that cost me £39 (through Amazon France).

About this limited edition, is a great opportunity for those Fatal Frame fans to get this jewel. Although is a shame that America didn't have a physical version like this, it still worth every cent to get a copy.
About the game itself, in my opinion, the gameplay and combat improved a lot, the graphics are great to bring the feeling and the right atmosphere. The story at the start was ok but later all gets more deeper and touching.
I am really satisfied and happy to be able to play this game

Me and my best friend have been a massive fan of the series since the release of the first one on the PS2. We've completed all the games including the fourth one which took us hours to sort out as the Nintendo pushed a patch through to region lock the Wii.

The 5th one was announced and man were we excited... and then no news of a English release. The Wii U was completely religion locked so we were saddened but we held onto hope. And then suddenly news. I brought the game on the release date and we were literally bouncing off the walls.

And for the first few chapters, the game was awesome, dark and scary and then you had to find the girl who you play in the prologue... a name popped up... a very familiar name for those who have played the previous installments- and everything crumbled.

From then on everything seemed rushed and unfocused. The story just falls flat because they don't explain certain things or they just don't care enough to tell you. Puzzles have been removed entirely, there are literally maybe 7 different random ghosts all of which always pop up. The glitches are huge, your hand will sometimes reach INTO the wall when picking up an item, at one point there's a gate and you ALWAYS teleport over to the other side never opening it, they didn't bother fixing that. Sometimes you can't trigger certain events because your stuck on something invisible or something like a mat that you should be able to walk over. The gamepad seems like it would be a good idea, but its hard to navigate with as both a camera AND a controller personally I felt the Wii Remote did a better job in number 4. The english voice actors although not as bad as the English Voice Actors for Deep Crimson can seem very emotionless and empty luckily you can switch it to Japanese.
