Rap music gets a 'bad' rap as far as I am concerned. I am a white woman of retirement age and believe that rap music is delivering a message that the young generation needs to hear. Like rockn'roll from my day, where we had our own music and our own message, rap delivers.

To understand our generation of children we need to know their history, what they believe in and where they come from. Compton, California in 1986 was an an area filled with fear. Fear of the racist police, who would stop a young black man for walking down the street. Not much has changed, but we can see in this film what life is like for our young men who come from Compton. They grew up with anger, anger at their poverty, their misery, no freedom in Compton. Even the buses carrying students to school were stopped by cars filled with gun toting gangs. The only means these young people had to express themselves was their music. We see the reality of life.

Rappers like Dr Dre, Ice Cube, and 'E', started with their rap. A white promoter, Jerry Helker, played by Paul Giametti, picked them up, gave them a record deal, and soon they were famous. Ice Cube is played by O'Shea Jackson, Jr, Cube's son by the way, Corey Hawkins plays Dr Dre. Exceptional performances all. Women are portrayed as playthings until Dr Dre finds his wife. But that was the time. Along came Suge Knight, and his group who were violent, crazy but made a lot of money. Easy-E played by Jason Mitchell is superb. A young man running drugs until he was introduced to rap and became Jerry Heller's real find. The ups and downs of the music business, the drugs, the money, the anger, the life in Compton, and finally finding a place to call their own.

This is a brutal film/documentary at times.

This is a great film with a fantastic soundtrack, both the original NWA songs and the new songs from Dr Dre's "Compton". The film is a great insight into the beginning, middle and end of NWA and the people affiliated with the group. I realise that the film portrays the members in a heroic way, and some issues may have been left out and some of the true details changed...but does it matter? No. This is how they want to tell their story, and the film does their version of events the justice it deserves, whilst paying respect to Eazy-E and 2Pac amongst others. I can't wait to watch this again as it is a brilliant film with a great soundtrack, just be sure to turn the volume up!

The main beef I have with biopics that claim authenticity of the story it's trying to tell is when I find out after the fact just how far it strays from reality. That's not the case with 'Straight Outta Compton'. With this drama based on the lives of the creators of N.W.A., we get a heartfelt telling of just how West Coast rap came to be such a dominant force in the music industry in the late 80's and early 90's through Eazy E, Dre, Ice Cube and others.

The acting was top notch from a handful of first timers and a few familiar faces. Specifically, it's uncanny how Ice Cube's son, O'Shea Jackson Jr, looks EXACTLY like his father for this role. You literally could not ask for a more perfect casting. As for Dre, Hawkins fulfills the role in style and Jason Mitchell really shines as Eazy-E. There was some real emotion delivered by the group. Not to mention I just wrote a review including Paul Giamatti and how much heft he brings to these roles.

I really liked the jumping from concert to concert on their tour back in 1989. I also appreciated the studio time we got with some of the guys when they started creating their beats and lyrics.

I go back to my original point about finding out after the fact how much is true or not, but thankfully, mostly everyone involved in this film is still alive. Dre and Cube are still kickin' and had their input to really make this feel authentic.

I thought it was a tad rushed to include Tupac and Snoop in such minor roles if they were really going to focus on Dre's rise near the final 30 minutes, but I heard the movie was cut down from 3 and a half hours to the two and a half hours it ended up being. I would have liked to see that.

Overall, we've got a real solid story told over the course of a really intimate time in American history, and while the movie doesn't really force you to take a side, it brings to light some of the real issues surrounding their lives. Plus, the soundtrack was top notch.

Heartily enjoyed this biopic of a group that played a huge part in my conscience growing up. I had F the Police playing full blast as my house was being raided by the police during my early teenage years and it shaped many of my lyrics which i then took round the world. Sadly it tries to portray certain characters as more golden than gold and misses out many of the well publicised events such as Dr Dre beating up a female journalist for a not so praising review. There are also some pointless scenes such as two women smoking weed snogging naked and the camera pans down to find one of them riding a male and the other sitting on his face. I understand that they are trying to demonstrate the level of debauchery but ends up being a little over the top and unbelievable letting it down slightly. I also felt it missed out on an opportunity to spend a little time away from the main characters to show the real impact there music had on the everyday lives of black America in the ghettos as well as how it evolved Hip hop worldwide as well as Hip Hop conscious backlash to what they were saying. However this is Hollywood and Hollywood is entertainment and it sure is.
