***This review is for the film only***

I wasn't really sure what to expect going into this film, I mean, "Turbo Kid"? Sounds very corny and very kiddie friendly, or so I thought. Boy was I in for a surprize.

The plot focuses on a young boy in an alternate timeline of 1997, Earth is an apocalyptic world not too dissimilar to that found in the Mad max movies and the wastelands are ruled by an evil tyrant known as Zeus (Michael Ironside - Total Recall, Watchers, Highlander 2). The kid (as we know him) is a scavenger and is obsessed by old comic books, one in particular "Turbo Rider". He meets the girl of his dreams and then, for reasons I shall leave unexplained, so's not to ruin the entire plot, they end up being viciously stalked by Zeus and his army of Mad max-esque nutcases. It's then up to "The kid" to take on the role of his favourite comic book character and save the day.

This film is just completely nuts, it's one of the most over the top, gruesome and downright imaginative action romps I have seen in years. It blends all of the nostalgia of the 1980's and early 90's family films such as The Goonies and The Go Kids and seemlessly splices them with some of the most over the top horror and gore you'll ever see.

It's an old school 80's style action adventure film with a Steam Punk feel and is very similar in look and tone (although a lot more light hearted) to Hobo With a Shotgun staring Rutger Hauer, if you've seen that one then you'll know what to expect.
We have kids with inventive steam punk weapons, being chased on thier BMX bikes by hoards of helmet wearing, dumb as you like loonies with crossbows, bikes and circular saw firing guns.

Turbo Kid is a retro post apocalyptic nostalgic teen gore-fest B movie......and is absolutely brilliant.

Set in a 'future' 1997 but filming as if it's been made in the early 80s this a great homage to an era of film that is long since gone but allows viewers of a certain age to reminisce fondly with a great big smile on their face. Imagine it is 1981 and you've gone to the video store to rent out a video..you pick the one that looks like it has a great cover even though you've never heard if it....remember all that scratchiness at the beginning of the tape, the 80s synth sounds kicking in.....it's all here!

Plot wise it's a post apocalyptic scenario and a few survivors struggle to live in the desolate wilderness surrounded by a green mist spewed wasteland. In charge is Zeus (a fantastic Michael Ironside) and his cronies who have developed a way of making water (crushing bodies). In this wilderness is the kid who dreams of being a superhero and lives through his comic books - notable Turbo Man. After befriending a bizarre female called Apple and discovering a red and black leather superhero suit on a dead body in a bunker 'The Kid' becomes Turbo Kid and with the aid of a cowboy tackles Zeus and his cronies in what is one of the most blood soaked movies outside of any zombie film (think the amount of gore in, say, Braindead).

As Turbo Kid Munro Chambers makes the part his own and you can tell that the whole cast actually know just what sort of movie they are making here. The last act is just spoiled a little for me by the VERY over the top deaths that seem a bit OTT eve for this film, but this is a tremendous homage to a time people of my age (40) remember with great fondness. I unfortunately don't think a modern audience will 'get it' which is a real shame as it is a far cleverer movie than the general audience will imagine.

I can only hope that we see Turbo Kid 2 somewhere down the line.

As a signed up fan of genre and horror, I am firmly of the belief that gore is disgusting (I’m not a gore hound horror fan) until that point where it becomes hilarious. It’s for that exact reason that I am actually willing to defend the evil dead remake – to a point. Turbo Kid is another example to add to that list of films that become incredible fun thanks to turning the gore knob up to 100, thanks to having a cannon attached to the titular character's arms that is able to blow up anything and everyone. The 3 directors have great fun at the expense of this as did I, the number of times I burst out laughing made mincemeat out the ‘6 laugh test’.

Unfortunately there are odd occasions where I think that the effects team and directors were having a bit too much fun, at the end of the film there is a scene which has one guy running around with the disembodied legs of his friend over his head and his friend with said the upper half of that same mutilated person, fast forward a few frames and that situation has escalated into some sort of gore Jenga. Taking gore to the point of ridiculousness is funny (unless you are Lucio Fulci) but when you run off into the sunset like Turbo Kid does it honestly becomes a little boring.

Like a mix of BMX Bandits and Mad Max, Turbo Kid finds the perfect style and tone of ozzie-sploitation and self-aware fun. Or to put it another way - it’s like Hobo with a Shotgun only fun. The story is best avoided on the pure premise that there isn’t one which is just perfect; Turbo Kid is a silly and gratuitous spectacle - the perfect Saturday night film.
