Product Description

Perhaps the most notorious video nasty of all time, ANTHROPOPHAGOUS is back to deprave and corrupt a fresh wave of horror film viewers!

Joe D Amato cemented himself into genre film history with this slickly directed, and sinisterly suspenseful, creature feature which has some unprepared tourists arriving on a desolate Mediterranean island only to find themselves stalked by a silent cannibalistic Neanderthal! Featuring gory special effects, that convinced some British moral guardians that ANTHROPOPHAGOUS was a legitimate snuff movie , there is little doubting that this timeless terror totem still holds up today. Also boasting a cast of genre legends, such as Tisa Farrow (ZOMBIE FLESH EATERS), Zora Kerova (CANNIBAL FEROX) and George Eastman (RABID DOGS), 88 Films is proud to present ANTHROPOPHAGOUS, fully uncut and uncensored, and re-mastered for its worldwide HD debut!

Also includes the feature length documentary 42nd STREET MEMORIES: THE RISE AND FALL OF AMERICA S MOST NOTORIOUS BLOCK!

What better accompaniment to a certified grindhouse classic like ANTHROPOPHAGUS than this long-awaited expose of New York s notorious den of sex, sin and cinema? Many a movie made its mark in one of Manhattan s long-demolished exploitation establishments and 42nd STREET MEMORIES tells the story of the good old days of big city slime, sweat and sleaze. Directed by Calum Waddell and featuring an esteemed list of interviewees, including Joe Dante (GREMLINS), Frank Henenlotter (BASKET CASE), Larry Cohen (Q, THE WINGED SERPENT), William Lustig (MANIAC), adult performer Veronica Hart, author John Skipp and many more this is the last word on the golden era of the world s most celebrated sprawl of film theatres.

One of the films that made me feel like an absolute badass as a kid. That gory front cover in my collection. All my friends staring in intrigue and disgust whenever they came to my house for tea, and then not eating their tea. After all these years, it holds up as a great exploitation film by Joe D'Amato.

So why 3 stars? I'm glad 88films are putting out some of the dirtiest movies around, which I personally adore and continue to collect to feed my addiction on blu ray. But their transfers are very hit and miss. A majority of the slasher releases in the red cases have very good, clean and stable transfers. But titles from the Italian collection, like this, Emanuelle & The Last Cannibals, A Blade In The Dark. They're very messy looking. And whilst being a step up from the DVD's, they still don't look good enough by a long shot. Blacks turn green, colors merge together, and the image just looks blurry. Unnaturally blurry.

I still say pick this up for the film and the 42 street documentary, and if you're a collector or a film lover in general, this is still the next best thing. However, it must stress, that it is far from perfect. I'm hoping that once 88films gets more of a following and end up bringing in more money, that they revisit some of these titles and clean them up properly.

If like me you were a teenager in the eighties then I daresay you had this on a beat up video cassette you got from a festival or the back of a horror magazine. Not one of greatest nasties but what's not to like. Awful dubbing, cheesy acting, gore galore and an eighties soundtrack to die for. Also we have the biggest set of headphones ever put on screen. Wonderful in everyway. Also included is a great documentary about 42nd street in America.

Joe D'Amato's infamous video nasty Anthropophagous The Beast makes it's worldwide Blu ray debut here from UK indie label 88 Films. For a first here in Blighty this controversial and long time banned Italian splatter classic is presented completely uncut and uncensored retaining all the scenes which the BBFC deemed as to grotesque for words back during the debacle that was the video nasty witch hunt of the early 80s. As a neat touch 88 Films have provided this new release with reversible cover art with the original back-in the day VHS sleeve from VFP being an option. It is also worth mentioning that the opening credits bear one of the films many alternative titles which in this case is The Savage Island.

Synopsis:
With an opening that sets the tone for the movie perfectly we follow a young, loved up German couple as they make their way through a maze like Greek village and down to a secluded beach. Whilst the guy relaxes listening to jazzy funk music through a ridiculously large pair of headphones the girl goes for a dip in the inviting blue Mediterranean. On seeing a deserted fishing boat she investigates only to be attacked from below by an unseen assailant. In a incredibly creepy sequence the still unseen attacker makes his way onto the beach with only his point of view shown. With blood spotting onto the sand he walks over to the oblivious guy and plants a meat cleaver firmly in his head.
Cut to Athens where we meet up with a group of tourists who charter a sailing boat for a spot of island hopping. After meeting up with Julie (Tisa Farrow of Zombie Flesh Eaters)a young women traveling alone the group decide to offer her a lift to an island which she describes as paradise where she is to meet up with some friends with whom she is to spend the summer.

I'm giving this a five star to counteract the weird 1 star review (from someone who hasn't watched the print!). This film has always delighted me in a way that I can't describe. Its badly made, looks like it was shot with a fisher price toaster, and has long meandering patches of inaction, but it still is incredibly watchable. Plus the last 20 minutes really makes up for the lack of action, and packs in some serious taboo bashing gore.
Glad that this is finally out uncut in a decent print in the UK.

Great to finally get another original video nasty from the DPP list uncut and in HD for my collection. Picture and sound quality is excellent given the age and obvious lack of budget. 88films in my opinion have done a fantastic remaster for the fans.
The 81min documentary about 42nd street is a brilliant watch, revealing the sleaze and grime of the grindhouse theatres and how things were back in the day. I so wish I had been around to experience it!! Brilliant documentary and the best this cult movie has ever looked.
Get it while you can 😊
