Product Description

In 1881, Doc Holliday enters the 'No Name Saloon' and challenges a man to a game of poker. He bets his horse for the opponent's wife, the whore Katie Elder, and wins. From then on, Elder goes wherever Doc goes. When they arrive in Tombstone, Sheriff Wyatt Earp is standing as a candidate in the local election, but hostilities erupt and the Clanton family, a gang of outlaw cowboys, make their opposition felt. Doc soon joins forces with Earp and his brothers to take on the Clanton gang.

This gritty, revisionist take on the true story of the legendary gunfight at the OK Corral stars Stacy Keach as Doc Holliday and Faye Dunaway as Kate Elder, and features music by the legendary songwriter Jimmy Webb ( Wichita Lineman ).

Doc [1971]
Faye Dunaway plays Kate Elder, a prostitute won by Doc Holliday in a card game, in this sort of remake of gunfight at the OK Corral (1957). Doc Holliday is played by Stacy Keach and Harris Yulin is Wyatt Earp. The film picks up the story as notorious gunfighter Doc Holliday arrives in Tombstone, Arizona to help his old mate Earp rid the town of outlaws. Holliday, who is dying of an incurable disease probably figures he has nothing to lose, which is just as well, because the subsequent shoot-out with the Clanton gang resulted in the most famous of all Western legends. It is still a lot of fun with a magnificent score by Jimmy Webb.

It's been a few years since I watched Frank Perry's revisionist western "Doc", so I was happy to catch up with it recently. It is yet another account of the "The Gunfight at the OK Corral", which surely qualifies as the most filmed gunfight in history. In this film the central character is a morose Doc Holliday, played impressively by Stacey Keach. His friend Wyatt Earp is a scheming opportunist who uses his position for political gain. This has a truthful ring to it! Harris Yulin is surprisingly good in the role. The strong script by Pete Hamill explodes a lot of western mythology surrounding the famous gunfight. Earp gets a richly deserved shoeing from Ike Clanton in good mud and rags western style, although he bounces back remarkably well preserved after such an ordeal. One good scene even has Earp informing Holliday that they are not the good guys, as indeed they emphatically aren't. Again this has the ring of truth to it! Would Earp have lasted in such turbulent times if he had been Mr nice guy. History so often give us heroes with feet of clay.

The film was shot in the popular Almeria, Spain with an American cast. Keach and Yulin get good support from the ever reliable Faye Dunaway as the whore Kate Elder. Dunaway's filthy appearance is a far cry from her poised character in "The Thomas Crown Affair". The film starts strongly with Doc attemting to order a cold beer in a cantina. The owner replies "We ain't got no cold beer". Doc says " Well what have you got". He says "Warm Beer". To which Doc replies dryly "Give me a warm beer". We then get a strange game of cards followed by a ride across a desert. It is a promising start which the film does not quite manage to maintain. But even so it is a commendable effort, and the film stands up well against more recent interpretations of the legend starring Kurt Russell and Kevin Costner. Another decent addition to Optimum's Western Classics. As usual with this no frills series there are no extras.

I have never seen this before so I took a gamble on it when I saw it and I was very pleased with it I have always been interested in the period the story is about.
Doc is based on the tales of wyatt earp and doc holiday around the ok corral there have been many films about this historical time but this is probably one of the best I have seen so far.
Stacy keach is great in this film as is faye dunaway one of the better films I have seen her in too this is a good old cowboy film it has depth, entertainment, and good acting a very good honest story great bluray version.
