Product Description

Product Description

From the controversial diretor of Irreversible and Enter the Void comes a sexual melodrama about a boy and his two girls. It's a love story, which celebrates sex in a joyous way.

As still as Enter The Void is frenetic, Love is a stylistic change from Gaspar Noé but thematically it's business as usual. This is a good thing. Unusually edited with brief fades to black in place of traditional cuts within scenes, it's a slower Noé than we're accustomed to, which suits the fragmented presentation of what is obviously a very personal story. The 3D is extremely effective: cigarette smoke curls seductively out of the screen; the main character is photographed in doorways which trap him as visually as he is trapped emotionally; a mother is literally cornered by a daughter she has failed; a nightclub's lighting rig bathes young lovers in pure colour. The film quite literally pops off the screen. This is to me a new way of using 3D, as good as Martin Scorsese in Hugo and essential to the telling. I'm not sure it will be as good a film in 2D, where the focus will be almost entirely on acting which is raw and occasionally not entirely convincing. Kudos to the three leads though for fully committing to what is essentially a high budget porno love story. I liked the film a lot and I think it will improve on subsequent viewings.

Technically the blu-ray is excellent, a fine picture remains consistent throughout with no obvious flaws and great multichannel sound, front heavy, which seems appropriate for the story. There are no extras which is not a problem for me but I understand this may be a disappointment. Edit: PoochJD's review points out the lack of subtitles in any form, an aspect of the disc I did not examine. He is quite correct that this is a shameful state of affairs from one of our biggest arthouse distributors.

In conclusion then it's a new skin for the old ceremony and Noé fans are well served. I'm not sure it will win him many new ones though.

The film is 4-stars, as it's actually very, very good, and one of Gaspar Noe's most mature and intelligent works. Yes, it's graphic. Yes, it's extremely controversial, but there's a real maturity and intensity to the work, that has previously been missing, and it's nice to see Noe trying much harder to make a film that deals on a much more adult level.

Of course, if you're looking for a film with explicit sex, then yes, this film will certainly fit that bill. But it's a genuinely smart film, that attempts something more than the base-material it seems to at-first be about. And yes, you can watch the film in normal 2D, or - if you have a suitably equipped TV and Blu-Ray player - then you have the option of seeing the film in 3D, which is actually quite effective, and worth experiencing! Just be warned, there will be at least two scenes, that will make you "jump"!

Sadly, the reason for the 2-Star rating, is simply because there are no extras of any kind on the disc. No trailer, no interviews with the cast or crew, no audio commentary, no copy of the 20-minute Q&A session that was undertaken at the end of last year's UK-wide, one-night-only cinema release of the film. Hell, there's not even English Subtitles for the Deaf or Hard Of Hearing - a rather criminal oversight, considering this is Artificial Eye (or Curzon Artificial Eye, as they now trade as)!

I don't know why this is such bare-bones release, but it's shockingly poor, for a film that deserves to feature something, bearing in mind the notoriety that has greeted this film around the globe! It's shameful that Curzon Artificial Eye decided to make this such a dull release! I hope this is merely an oversight on their part, and not going to become the norm for their future releases...

Hopefully you know a little about the film history and subject matter that Gaspar Noe has focussed on in his career.
The subject matter being love/grief (Love), drugs/death (Enter The Void), revenge/sexual abuse (Irreversible).
In my eyes, Noe conveys these subjects, in his films, with honesty , conviction and a sense disorientating realism.
'Love' feels real, genuine, personal. Its simplistic but deals with complex human emotions in regards to love, affection, grie and regret.
Its not packed with developing dialogue, since its more interesting to understand this couples relationship simply by seeing them be with each other, letting us see their passion and also the deep regret he feel for losing her (not a spoiler)
Maybe not for people who don't follow Noes work. But I just loved it and always look forward to further features.

I wasn't able to view in 3D so I didn't get the full effect but its certainly a great explicit love story and up there with Shortbus and Nymphomania as the more open way of telling a story. I didn't warm to the selfishness of the male character , he was very much a spoilt little boy nor did Karl Glusman give much warmth to the role. Still its an entertaining odd and expressive film , I am sure I will get even more out of it the second time around.

Although not entirely without merit, I found it pretty much as most of the negative comments suggest. It rates very low on the erotic scale, although neither is it just a cheap exercise in (soft) porn. No doubt it has some sort of message, and indeed the photography is praiseworthy - hence one star instead of none.
Now the bad news: awful acting, turgid script, appalling diction (half of it whispered) and no sense of direction. I'm not quite sure whether the whole enterprise was intended as a hoax - or the writer/director was really in earnest in having created such a repetitive, unimaginative and pedantic film. There is absolutely nothing novel in the discovery by the protagonist that sex is no substitute for love, and what beggars belief is the mere idea that the actor concerned would even know what love is if it hit him straight in the face. A goldfish would have done the part just as well.
Enough said. If you like dreary, monotonous films without any sense of direction that go on for over 2 hours with lots of meaningless sex (which perhaps is the whole idea of this film) this is for you!
