Product Description

Rynn Jacobs (Jodie Foster) is a smart thirteen-year-old girl who lives in a secluded house that she and her father rent. After a number of locals come calling, they find that Rynn's father is never around. Suspicions are soon raised and members of the community - including the local police officer (Mort Shuman) and the landlord's sleazy son (Martin Sheen) - make it their business to pry into Rynn's affairs. But how far will she go to hide the truth of what she has been up to?

Featuring an outstanding performance by a young Jodie Foster, this dark and unsettling film was released the same year as her other critically acclaimed hits Taxi Driver and Bugsy Malone.

This overlooked gem of a psychological thriller features an excellent performance from a 14-year old Jodie Foster and a fantastically creepy turn from Martin Sheen as a paedophile. The scenes they share together are superbly acted and really crank up the tension and discomfort (the hamster torturing scene is particularly unpleasant). This film is a bit of a slow burner with very little in the way of action or gore, but the tense atmosphere really drew me in as more and more was revealed about what was going on in the house and what had gone on in the past.

In 1976 I was 8 years old and at the stage when I was noticing girls but not wanting to admit it - most boys go through that strange and beguiling feeling. I started fancying not just girls at school but ones I saw on tv, films and female pop singers. In 1976 I started having a crush on Jodie Foster after seeing her play Tallulah in "Bugsy Malone." Me and Jodie - an older woman!! Enough of that...

1976 saw Ms Foster in the best film of the '70s, "Taxi Driver", the aforestated "Bugsy Malone", and here, in the underated "The Little Girl Who Lives Down The Lane." All very different and iconically powerful performances. The range of her acting at the age of just 14 was remarkable.

In "The Little Girl..." I remember seeing bits of the film on tv when I was young, but only recently bought the dvd and watched the film from beginning to end. I love the understated feel of the filming of what has become 70's cinematic nostalgia; the scenery of small town america, the 'fall' landscape, the cars, fashions... even the electronic soundtrack, it takes me back. However, I was genuinely shocked when Jodie appeared naked, (actually, it was Jodies older sister who stripped for that scene), and got into bed with an older male - I wasn't prepared for that matter-of-fact scene.

The film is well scripted, acted and shot - some nice outdoor scenes in a place somewhere that I'd like to live. I haven't gone into the plot of the film as I would be just repeating earlier reviews. Suffice to add that Jodie gives another iconic and memorable performance that belied her young years. Outstanding.

A real trip down memory...er...lane.
As always the young Jodie Foster does an amazing job, and is more appealing (and in better films) than the older Jodie Foster.
Martin Sheen (just before "Apocalypse Now") is superb as the sleazy, sexual predator and all in all this has aged very well and makes for compulsive viewing.

A very well crafted, low key 70's thriller full of excellent performances.

It's pretty much universally accepted that Jodie Foster was one of the finest child actresses ever to hit the screen, and if proof were needed then it is to be found in this film. Giving a trade mark 'older than her years' performance she portrays an ultra cute young girl, but introduces a chilling menace I've not felt since I first watched Hitchcock's 'Psycho'.

This is well directed and thoroughly absorbing. If you like Jodie's work, you'll love this.

I hadn't seen this since the late 1970's when it was shown on TV a few times. In its day would probably have been a B movie (remember those) with another major picture, as at just under 90 mins its quite short.

But short is good, and when you have quality cast like this the combination makes for great entertainment. Hitchcock is a major influence, and it also reminded me a little of a few Columbo stories.

As previous reviewers have said Jodie Foster is quite brilliant in the leading role. When this was made she was 13 or 14 and if there has been a better actress at that age I can't think of one. However one good actor is not enough to make a good film and Martin Sheen is memorable as well.

I looked the film up in a large film book I have, and of course its not listed - it should be! This is a tense little thriller that deserves to be seen a few times.....

Jodie Foster plays Rynn Jacobs a thirteen year old, older than her years. After she and her father move into a rented house, so he can finish a book he's writing, visitors are constantly told he's busy. There's Mrs. Hallet played by Alexis Smith, and her lecher of a son, Frank Hallet, played by Martin Sheen. As their suspicions grow, they become more insistent on seeing her father, which comes to a sticky end for Mrs. Hallet.

Jodie Foster excels in this, made the same year as Taxi Driver. She made some of her best films in this period.

When first released in 1976, this film didn't get a wide cinema release, so only played in certain areas, possibly due to it's only having a small distributor, (AIP) and not having the clout of the major distributors. But it was never a 'B' movie, a film that supports the main feature. It is now rarely shown, if at all, on T.V. It has never achieved the recognition it so justly deserves.

Jodie Foster has said that this film was one that she disliked doing, but she plays the part brilliantly, and the story is also good.

Picture Quality is good, and the film is in it's original aspect ratio of 1.85:1.
The soundtrack is in it's original mono.

Highly recommended, especially if you're a Jodie Foster fan.
