One of the ways I rate a box set series is if I'm searching for another disc in the box after I know I've just watched the last episode in the series. This occurred yet again the other day as I watched that final scene in Season5. No spoilers, don't' worry.

Really have to make the suggestion to the producers that 10 episodes per series is simply not enough for viewers!

So Season5 is moving everything along - the blond one across the narrow sea is thinking more and more about invasion - but then there's that last minute twist. Alliances have been thrown in the air as usual and things are shaken up, and those pesky White walkers north of the wall seem to be finally on the move.

But it's Season5 and frankly I want things moving along a little more - can we get the friggin' White Walkers over the wall, can blondy get on a boat and at least start to sail?

I still love the franchise but I want to see more movement in some of the long term story arcs that have been bubbling since the beginning.

One of the most talked about and most followed tales continues into it's fifth season...........
A tale of intrigue and betrayal as the battle to claim the 'Iron-Throne' continues..
The tyrannical House of Lannister is in disarray and at it's most vulnerable after the death of 'Tywin' who's
influence and strength was a cornerstone of the power held at 'Kings Landing' and the seven Kingdoms.
After the killing of the evil 'Joffrey' the young and easily influenced 'Tommen' (Dean-Charles Chapman) is
now King, his mother 'Cersei' (Lena Headey) now ruling the roost in her sons name.
'Jamie Lannister' (Nicolaj Coster-Waldau) no longer the powerful figure he once was, and the wine and
woman obsessed 'Tyrion' (Peter Dinklage) in flight after killing his father, surely those who have the intent
to invade 'Kings Landing' and claim the Throne will have no better opportunity to do so.
Meanwhile at Castle Black after his heroics in the defence of 'The Wall' 'Jon Snow'(Kit Harington) becomes
elected as 'Lord Commander' of the Watch though he has many opponents within the ranks.
At 'Meereen' where 'Daenerys' (Emilia Clarke) now rules with her children the Dragons 'Drogan' 'Viserion'
and 'Rhaegal' her enemy's within the walls gather strength, also 'Drogan' who she had began to lose control
of takes to the sky's, 'Daenery's' does not know if he'll ever return.
'Arya Stark'(Maisie Williams) now completely on her own and believing herself to be the only surviving member
of the 'Stark' household seeks to lose her identity within the compound of a strange cult.

Much will be written about the fifth season of Game of Thrones in the months and years to come. This was always going to be the season in which George R.R. Martin's novels and David Benioff and D.B. Weiss's TV show were going to dramatically diverge from one another, the near-inevitable result of both the needs of dramatisation (which would likely not bear the introspection and subtlety of the fourth and fifth books in the series) and the fact that the TV show is now outpacing the books, requiring both outright invention on the part of the producers as well as drawing on elements from books as-yet unreleased, or even unwritten.

This process has mixed results. In some cases, the adaptation continues to hit its sweet spot of getting complex stories from the novels across on screen in a simpler form, but one that is also clearer, more concise and retaining the thematic essentials whilst paring away unnecessary (if still interesting) supporting material and characters. King's Landing particularly benefits from this, with lots of minor politics involving new or vanishingly minor characters swept aside in favour of a more ruthless focus on Cersei's growing hatred of the Tyrells and the arrival of the High Sparrow, played with flawless passion by Jonathan Pryce. This culminates in the excellent, distressing "Walk of Shame" sequence, in which Lena Headey knocks it out of the park as Cersei is humiliated to the point where even the most hardened viewer may feel sorry for her, despite her many crimes.

Almost as well-handled (until its conclusion) is the story at the Wall.

Contains some possible spoilers.

It is arguable that Game of Thrones Series 5 has not been the best installment of this remarkable programme. Indeed, was it not for the shocks and surprises of the last three brilliant episodes "Hard home", "The Dance of Dragons" and "Mothers Mercy" this may have been viewed as a relative disappointment. This was a very slow burn at the outset and some of the plots have been messy and convoluted. It triumphed with precision however as the series drew to a genuinely thrilling conclusion setting it up perfectly for the next round.

Issues include the Dorne story. In George R.R. Martin's book, this hardly screams off the page. Unfortunately, it had the same impact on the screen with Jamie and Bronn trying to form a sort of comedy double act, whilst his final scene with Myrcella had a predictable inevitability about it. The loose ends in the plots are also becoming a problem. What has happened to the Tyrell’s for example? We knew that Series Five would be a Bran Stark free zone, but it is difficult to explain why bearing in mind the sheer amount of energy that was invested in that storyline in previous services. Finally, it has been a relatively disappointing series in relation to Ayra with the "the Many Faced God" plot often drowning in too much mysticism and a slow apprenticeship.

This has been a brutal series not least Ramsey Bolton’s horrific treatment of Sansa Stark. It generated pages of controversy and comment. It could be argued that this was handled with care since the impact came from the terrible look on the face of her childhood friend Theon, who had been made to watch.
