The Hobbit: The battle of the five Armies is the best of the trilogy, and the extended edition is well worth buying. You get 20 minutes extra.

You get five discs with the first two being the film in 3D. The third disc is the film with optional Commentary in 2D. Disc four and five are the Appendices, 'Gathering the Storm' and 'Here at Journey's End'. For me The Hobbit five armies has the best 3D and the picture quality is just stunning.

By Gareth HALL OF FAMETOP 50 REVIEWER on 19 May 2015

It is a long time since I read any of Tolkien’s books, and I came to this having watched the first two Hobbit films, as well as the sequel Lord of the Rings trilogy. If, as with any film, you disregard the original source material and treat it on its own merits, then this is a very good conclusion to the first two films.

This is another fast-moving adventure, despite being almost two and a half hours long. Bearing in mind that it is an extended battle, or series of battles, I was surprised that it managed to keep my attention, as I am not really interested in the extended battle scenes that fill the Middle-Earth films. However, there was enough “character” time to hold me to the conclusion.

What was most noticeable, however, were the expanded scenes taken from references in later stories, which act as a lead-in to the Lord of the Rings itself. These are not in the original Hobbit story, but, as I said, are mentioned in passing in later stories, and here have been used to great effect, especially in the scene where we see Galadriel come to rescue Gandalf from his imprisonment, which quickly escalates into a major battle between her, Elrond, Saruman and the Ringwraiths.

This film is definitely not the end, but the beginning of the story.

How long do we have to now wait for the Tales of the Silmarillion?

So here it is at last – the culmination of Peter Jackson’s love affair with Middle-Earth. From the outset it’s clear that this will be as epic as anything we’ve seen before, and there is certainly no cause for complaint that the money spent on the movie isn’t shown on the screen. The long-awaited battle between Smaug and Bard the Bowman kicks things off – it feels very much like a continuation of previous events, but I can’t imagine anyone watching this won’t have seen the previous two Hobbit movies, so that’s not really a problem. Benedict Cumberbatch’s malevolent dragon is truly fearsome, and sets to the destruction of Lake Town with gay abandon, while Gandalf hangs helplessly caged in Dol Guldur, and Bilbo and his dwarven friends watch the carnage from afar. The movie is primarily about the bewitchment of Thorin Oakenshield however, and as the Arkenstone exerts its ring-of-power-esque nefarious charms on the dwarf king, friends become foes, and it falls to Bilbo to stand up to his growing madness, and rescue the alliance with elf Thranduil before the orc armies can divide and conquer.
There have been criticisms of the splitting of The Hobbit story into three films, however this kept me riveted for the duration, with less filler than you find in the average Hollywood drama and bags more style. When it was all over I felt glad to have been part of a generation for whom a decent cinematic treatment of Tolkein’s (other) magnum opus eventually became a reality, and suffice to say, I will be watching this and the other DVDs for years to come.

The movie is, as the previous 2 "Hobbit" movies, 100% for quality and finish!

The movie itself, however, did NOT blow me away, as the previous 2 "Hobbit" movies did (hence the 4 stars).....
This could merely be because I had high / preconceived ideas of what to expect,
and the movie did NOT play out as I expected it to, in the following 2 areas:

1. I thought that the final battle against the dragon Smaug would be a 20 to 30 minute scene,
but it seemed to run for no more than 10 minutes (I did not time it. but this is what it felt like to me).

2. I also felt that the final movie was fight, fight, fight, battle, battle, battle (which IS in the title of this movie),
but it became just too much for me! The battle just went on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on.....

I re-iterate:
I think my expectations were misaligned,
and I was a little disappointed in the movie,
especially when compared to the previous 2 "Hobbit" movies.

If you set your expectations for this movie to fight and battle,
you will THOROUGHLY enjoy the culmination of the "Hobbit" series!

Excellent as always from Mr Jackson - I say this purely from watching the films, I Have a HUGE problem with the way he manipulated the LOTR books and an even bigger issue with the Hobbit but that aside as a film this is perfection. If you can watch this and ignore comaprisons to the book then you are in for a treat. The extended version added a lot in my opinion (still not in keeping with the book but a lot none the less)
