I'm torn by this one, as it is one of my favourite Hammer horrors, and I was keenly looking forward to adding a hi-def version of this lush and lurid tragedy to my collection, but this transfer while looking good has one very weird glitch.

Check out the credits. In all previous versions we had the credits playing over a single take close up of Oliver Reed's face in werewolf make-up as his weeping eyes looked from side to side.

In this blu-ray version all proceeds in familiar fashion until we get to the credit for photography, production design and supervising editor. Suddenly the image freezes and a big black blob obscures part of the picture. The soundtrack continues as normal and then we return to the moving image for the remaining credits.

Checking my region 1 DVD of Curse, I find that what is being obscured by the black blob on this blu-ray edition is the word 'Technicolor'.

Can anyone explain what the flip is going on and why Final Cut have stuck this horrible sticking plaster over that particular part of the credits?

I appreciate this is spectacularly trivial but it is pretty glaring and irritating if you know what the credits should actually look like.

It's enough to make you howl at the moon.

A personal favorite of mine as it scared the bejesus out of me when I was 10 years old and was allowed to stay up and watch it on ITV's appointment with fear in the early 70's. Hammers only werewolf film is one of the best of their early cannon. A well acted tale with a slow burn up to the appearance of Oliver Reed in full makeup.

I nearly did not buy this as the run time says 88 mins but it is actually 92.45 mins which makes it uncut, which if it were not, would have made one of the doc's 'Censoring the Werewolf' ironic

A great buy for Hammer aficionados!

FINAL CUT BD RELEASE: Good film, not the best werewolf film I have viewed but good nevertheless. The BBFC of the time did not help matters as they were very censorious about this film. Hammer should have filmed every scene for potential future use, but I accept it's easy to say that with hindsight. I liked the gradual build up of this film, not rushing into the story too fast, which worked for me.
As for the picture quality, this was very good, clearly the result of some major attention unlike other shameful (non Hammer related) BD issues I could mention. There needs to be a law or regulation passed forcing distributors to accurately describe the quality of BD release, whether fully restored, etc. as too many releases are misleading.
If you like Hammer horrors you should find this appealing with its olde worlde atmosphere and lovely photography.

Quite an interesting early Hammer by their best director Terence Fisher. Not really a creature-feature as we only get the transformation very near the end. The rest of the film contains horrors of different kinds such as the threat of appalling abuse and implications thereof. It has a reasonable script and build-up with decent production values throughout. The ageing of character is convincing, It has a seriousness about it and sincerity of performance which creates pathos undermining the stereotypic. Oliver Reed is excellent and the whole thing works to bring out the logic that he ain't to blame for his sins - it's what people did before that matters.

I just got around to viewing the new blu-ray of Curse and it looks spectacular. Colors are rich, blacks are relatively inky, and detail is very crisp in the close-ups (I watched mine on a ten-foot screen). This to my eyes is one of the better Hammer blu-ray efforts. Everyone reading this should know about the film so I won't go into that. The supplements are very nice. Interviews with Hammer crew and the two principal female leads make it special as does the background info provided by various Hammer experts. This is a winner. If you are at all hesitant, fear not. You should be very pleased with how this looks (and sounds).

The print used is immaculate. The colours are bright the detail vivid and the sound excellent. I've never seen the movie look this good. The making of is interesting and quite long (over 40 minutes) making this a great buy for Hammer enthusiasts. I know there will be controversy over the projection ratio as there always is with Hammer films. Look beyond this and enjoy this underated movie.

The curse of the Werewolf is a excellent Hammer Horror, and as far as I know this was their only werewolf film, which surprises me especially with the amount of story's they could of done, but still this is a great film which comes with a very nice Blu-ray picture quality, it gets a 4/5 from me. It comes with a great new 13 min documentary, which is well worth a look plus the making of the film, and a few more good features. This is a great release, and a must for all Hammer Horror fans.

Big negative thing about this release there are no English sub-tiles, or for any country.
You would think with todays Blu-ray's they wound come as standard.

Produced when Hammer Films was at its height, this is a fine adaption of a novel about werewolves. This film also brought a very young Oliver Reed into the limelight. Overall, its a fine production with a good script. The sets may look a little amatuerish, but remember Hammer was known for its low budget successes during those years. Oliver Reed plays a young man who is cursed by turning into a werewolf during nights of the full moon. He can only be redeemed by the love of a young girl. The ending is brilliant to watch. If you are a die-hard Hammer fan you must buy this. And the price is good too. Picture and sound are good considering the film's age.
