SYNOPSIS:

His terrifying secret, his hideous obsession made him... The Man Who Could Cheat Death

Director Terence Fisher (The Curse of Frankenstein, Dracula, The Hound of the Baskervilles) transformed the fate of Hammer Pictures with his vibrant and explicit series of gothic horror films, which would become the studio's signature style for nearly two decades. Fisher continued his winning streak for the studio with this tale of scientific debauchery, which remains one of Hammer Films finest achievements.

Doctor and amateur sculptor Georges Bonnet (Anton Diffring Circus of Horrors, Fahrenheit 451) has discovered a murderous method of maintaining his youth, once every ten years he murders a young woman and removes her parathyroid glands to replace his own. But after 104 years, he's run into some problems. His collaborator is now too old to perform the surgical procedure, and a detective is on his case. In desperation Bonnet blackmails another surgeon (Christopher Lee) into performing the procedure by threatening the life of Janine Dubois (Hazel Court), a woman who both men desire.

With cinematography by Jack Asher (whose Bava-esque use of colours lend the film an almost dreamlike quality) and set-design by Bernard Robinson who could miraculously produce lavish and expensive looking sets on a tight budget, Eureka Entertainment is proud to present The Man Who Could Cheat Death available in the UK for the first time on Blu-ray in a special dual-format edition.

This is an absolute bargain from EUREKA . Perhaps not Hammer's finest hour, but nonetheless a worthwhile watch, particularly for Hammer completists and, most definitely, for fans of Hazel Court who has seldom been more lovingly photographed in the most splendid of (low cut) dresses. Shame we can't see the Continental version!. The film is more talky than usual and not one of Sangster's best, but the cast carry it off as well as they can. The sets and costumes are well up to Hammer's high standard, and the colour on the DVD is good (I don't have Blu Ray, but if it is better, it will be great). 16.9 ratio (fills my whole TV screen) with good sound. You also get a booklet that is fun to read, and subtitles. All in all a grand release. Did I mention Hazel....?

Love this movie and very impressed with this release. This version is head and shoulders above the American release which I also have and is the reason I imported it. Highly recommended!

At last a UK release of this late 1950's Hammer production, the fact you get it in both Blu-ray & DVD formats make it good value. A pity some other publishers don't do the same when releasing theses old classics ( Final Cut for example). It also comes with a very informative 28 page booklet about the production of the film with original advertising material & press publicity - again its shame others don't go to this effort. EUREKA must be congratulated on putting that little extra effort in, it just completes the whole package off nicely.
In fact the only thing missing that would have been nice (if its out there?) would be a theatrical trailer.

Not the finest from Hammers sixties output but certainly not the worst either.
Differing is competent in a role originally written for Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee delivers a solid performance.
The direction is handled well from Terrance Fisher but the production lacks a little - it is quite wordy in parts and isn't all out action - although never boring. The climax is as expected and is complimented with two excellent interviews to complete this special edition Blu-ray and DVD duel set.
Sadly the transfer is not the best with grain evident in the darker scenes but certainly an improvement on editions from abroad.
