Product Description

BY SWORD. BY PICK. BY AXE. BYE BYE.

Although the slasher film was in decline by the mid-1980s, there were still some grisly delights to be had... and they don t come much grislier than writer-director Buddy Cooper s sickening stalk-and-slash classic The Mutilator!

When Ed receives a message from his father asking him to go and lock up the family s beach condo for the winter, it seems like the perfect excuse for an alcohol-fuelled few days away with his friends. After all, his dad has forgiven him for accidentally blowing mom away with a shotgun several years ago... hasn t he? But no sooner are the teens on the island than they find themselves stalked by a figure with an axe (and a hook, and an onboard motor) to grind...

Originally entitled Fall Break (watch out for the incongruous theme song of the same name!), The Mutilator has earned a reputation amongst horror fans as one of the holy grails of 80s splatter mayhem due to its highly inventive (and not to say, decidedly gruesome) kill sequences, courtesy of FX wizard Mark Shostrom (Videodrome, Evil Dead II). Finally making its long-awaited bow in High-Definition, The Mutilator has returned to terrorise a whole new generation of horror fans!

Arrow Films continue their penchant for giving sub-par horror films the genuine five star treatment and this 1984 shocker 'The Mutilator' (aka 'Fall Break') is no exception.

Whilst cleaning one his father's rifles as a birthday surprise, young Ed Jr. accidentally puts a bullet into his mother - instantly killing her. 'Big Ed' (Jack Chatham), the boy's father never forgives him and the two lose touch. Fast forward many years and young Ed has now grown up to be Matt ('Basket Case 2') Mitler, who with his friends are at a lose end and cannot decide what to do for their college's upcoming fall break. Out of the blue, 'Big Ed' calls his son demanding that he clean up their beachfront condo and close it for the winter. Against his better judgement, Ed's friends (Ruth Martinez, Bill Hitchcock, et al) convince him to accept the job - however, a mysterious stranger is hiding out at the condo and is determined to put a stop to their booze and sex filled break. Using whatever tools he has at his disposal, the stranger is on full vendetta mode and poor 'ol Ed and his buddies will be hunted and murdered in a myriad of gruesome ways until the strangers identity is finally revealed... and y'know, that's kinda it.

The movie itself (directed by one hit wonder, Buddy Cooper) is a hit and miss affair. Slow and plodding with below average acting (except for lead Matt Mitler who does a fine job), the film is reminiscent of a time where the stalk and slash genre had definitely slowed down to a laborious crawl... and this one shows.

Buddy Cooper's infamous seasonal slasher favourite The Mutilator (aka Fall Break) makes it's belated high definition debut courtesy of cult movie distributor Arrow Films. For the patient fan of 80s horror this special edition has been a long time in the coming but rest assured this Blu ray/DVD combo package will undoubtedly be the definitive version thanks to a brand new 2k restoration (from a 35mm print that was found at the library of Congress of all places) which not only presents The Mutilator in widescreen for the first time but is also completely uncut and uncensored restoring all the carnage missing from the BBFC scissored Vipco release and the softer 'R' rated American cut. This special edition also comes loaded with exclusive supplementary material, a glossy insert booklet, a postcard reproduction of the theatrical art and as always from Arrow a reversible sleeve this time with alternative poster design featuring the films rarely used title of "Fall Break". It is worth noting that Arrow have released The Mutilator simultaneously in the UK and US with both releases being identical in quality and content and the print used for this transfer bears the "Fall Break" title card over the opening credits.

    Synopsis:
Opening a number of years before the main events of the movie we meet up with a young boy called Ed who accidentally shoots his mother dead whilst attempting to clean his father's hunting rifle as a birthday surprise.

It says that I'm not a verified purchaser of this set but I was able to order this release directly from Arrow which came along with a Limited Edition Slip (I believe it's limited to 1000 copies, but don't quote me on it) which doesn't feel cheap [I don't know how else to describe the high quality of the slip]. This is another great package from Arrow with an excellent making-of feature length documentary that never gets boring. However, the transfer is disappointing but Arrow have done the best they could with the time, money and the materials available to them; a 35mm master print. The following comes from the booklet:
"... there are still noticeable instance of damage on the picture and soundtrack that are in keeping with the condition of the source elements. There are also instances in which the original print was mistimed during lab printing, which resulted in some sections of the films cast in blue. We have worked to correct the colour for these sections as much as possible"

The frustrating thing is that this problem doesn't come up for a frame or two, but with a full reels, which is around 15 minutes. and that can take you out of the film. What you see on the left hand side of the frame, say 5% to 10% of the full image, is fading with a red tint.

If it wasn't for the problems with the transfer this would be another 5 star release from Arrow (that's not taking the quality of the actual film), however fans of the film or horror genre will enjoy the full package but you might want to wait for a sale. The negative of doing this is the risk of missing out on the slip, if that's what you are into.
