Product Description

Few slasher classics have proven to be more controversial than Romano Scavolini's sicko slice 'em up epic NIGHTMARES IN A DAMAGED BRAIN!

Finally unleashed in the UK, for the first time since VHS (back when the distributor of this bloodthirsty HALLOWEEN cash-in was imprisoned for 18 months just for daring to unleash it!), NIGHTMARES IN A DAMAGED BRAIN depicts the slow mental burn down of an escaped psychopath as he hacks his way through New York's 42nd Street, horny teenagers and random suburban housewives! But there is more to his rampage than meets the eye, as a shocking final twist reveals!

Featuring enough Freudian-fermentation to appease genre academics, and packing in more plasma splashed set pieces than any of its rivals; NIGHTMARES IN A DAMAGED BRAIN is advised only for the strongest of stomachs! One thing is for sure though - this is the Slasher Classic you have all been craving for!

  • Audio Commentary by Bill Paul

Yep, this is the real deal. Unlike the Code Red release, this version it completely intact. It's also a pretty entertaining watch, with various elements which mercifully fly in the face of political correctness. The two prints are very different in hue, proving that 88 Films really did go to a completely different well as their source, and if I really had to pick a hole, it's that some of the framing is a little tight, but 99.99% of the audience wouldn't even be aware of it, just the seasoned gorehounds. As to the movie itself, there are some unintentional giggles to be found, but so many intended ones which are definitely intended for the cooler folk watching, and nobody walks away shrugging at the wonderfully twisted flashback - it really is the stuff of legend. I saw a big-screen showing back in about 99, and the packed audience had a Hell of a time, and it's so much fun that you really need to pick this up. It doesn't show it here, but the sleeve is reversible, with the original "video nasty" artwork on the other side!!

About 15 years ago, a prominent horror journalist said of Nightmares in a Damaged Brain "...One of the nastiest of the nasties...it's hard to imagine it ever being released again".

How's that for an advert?

Finally we get a decent print of one pf the most notorious video nasties, when this film was released by World Of Video 2000 in 1982 the distributor got arrested and given a 6 month jail sentence for restoring footage in the VHS prints originally cut by the BBFC. Now at last for the first time you can see it legally totally uncut and in a lovely 2K print, just don't expect it to be exactly 3D because it is an early 80's low budget slasher film.

It is a deeply disturbing and gory slasher movie about a young mental patient on parole who suffers from horrific nightmares which courses him to leave New York and drive off to Florida stopping by to kill people on the way in a nasty and sadistic way. On arrival he becomes obsessed with a single parent family and killing all their friends, I will not say anymore about the plot but I will say this. KEEP AWAY FROM THE OVERPRICED US BLU RAY OF THIS FILM, the price people are charging for that one is a P%$# take.

Absolutely brilliant movie and definately the BEST of all the DPP UK banned movies, now released from 88films on Blu-ray and dvd, completely uncut amd uncensored for the first time ever since the video nasties scandal.

Picture quality is grainy at times but this was a low budget movie and looks way superior to the UK dvd release by Screen Entertainment. Nice to see it in widescreen format for the first time too.

Quick note about the movie: This still scares hell out of me. The sound effects are genius at creating jump moments and the murders are super gore-tastic. The 'final nightmare' ending is one of the most memorable of all the slashers from the early 80s era and images will remain with you long after the film finishes. For strong stomachs only! Special FX are brilliant. And while some of the acting may be a bit of a letdown, the actual story and set-pieces will keep you hooked right up to the very end.
The real grimeness of 42nd street is a joy to see. Just shows how times have changed.

Extras are pretty good too...i have yet to listen to the commentary but should be interesting.

I have compared this with previous UK versions and make no mistake in saying this is FULLY UNCUT as stated by 88films.

10/10 release. Nice reversible artwork. Can't decide which cover to use!!
Any serious horror fans MUST have this in their collection. You won't be dissapointed!!
Thanks to 88films for sending my copy the week before release 😊

Out a little later than they hoped for, but here at last. Can chuck away all my dodgy cut discs of this film for this great looking print. The mono sound is a little quiet/muffled in places but it was low budget, boom man probably a family friend of the producer. - now to do what I worked out 30 odd years ago, where to start playing "Careful with that axe Eugene" so the scream coincides with first strike of the axe in the finale. Works for me every time ! -

Format: DVD
Please note the following review is for the 88 Films Blu ray.
Romano Scavolini's infamous 1981 video nasty "Nightmares in a Damaged Brain" (or just plain "Nightmare" in the US) makes it's UK Blu ray debut from cult movie distributor 88 Films as part of their Slasher Classics collection with a brand new freshly transferred 2k scan from original 35mm elements. In an all time first for UK consumption this is presented with all of it's celebrated carnage intact and more importantly is longer than the Code Red release reinstating missing frames that weren't present in any of the three (!!) cuts included on that elusive American import. It is also worth noting that there is still a miniscule amount of inconsequential non gore related footage still missing compared to an obscure Dutch VHS tape but for all intents and purposes 88 Films' edition is the longest and most complete cut available. This also comes complete with a selection of new and exclusive extras, an insert booklet and as always from 88 Films a reversible sleeve featuring the original video nasty era artwork. As a footnote it is also worth mentioning that this is also available from 88 Films as a DVD edition with identical content(albeit in standard definition)which strangely is the only version available on Amazon at this time of writing.

Synopsis:
Supposedly cured psychiatric patient George Tatum (the incredible Baird Stafford) is released from a New York mental institution with his doctor believing him to be of no threat to the citizens of America that is despite despite being labeled as a schizophrenic with mild amnesia and homicidal dream fixations who is also prone to seizures.
