Well the other reviewer is correct in that there is indeed a scene missing from this DVD.
I am very disappointed by this and it makes the end of the movie seem kinda strange, and doesnt really make sense.
IF YOU DON'T KNOW THE STORY THEN DON'T READ THE NEXT BIT AS IT GIVES AWAY THE ENDING, BUT I AM JUST TRYING TO EXPLAIN WHAT IS MISSING!
There is a scene in the movie (at the end) where there is an explosion and the main characters are involved. Then suddenly the music starts and the credits start and the main characters have obviously just got married but it makes no sense and there is no explanation of what happened after the explosion or how they got there!
I just checked the video and there is a whole other scene after the explosion where Denis Quaid is in hospital and Ellen Barkin comes to visit and talk about the case and he proposes. This whole scene is missing from the DVD.
WHY WHY WHY
The thing that really gets me is that if you weren't familiar with the film you wouldn't realise this was missing, you would just think it had a funny ending!
How many other films do they do this with and not let on?
Signed

Great movie. Except that in the latest edition on DVD (released March 2004), the last scene before the end-titles is missing. I suspect they left it out on purpose, so they could save money producing it on a single layer-disc. Bad thing is, the scene is essential for the movie to make sense.
DON'T BUY THIS VERSION!

Cutting the final scene was idiotic! The thriller element was only ever a vehicle for the romance to which you're now ROBBED of a satisfying conclusion.

Skip this atrocity until it's re-issued whole - which it's bound to be - the seduction scene between Quaid / Barkin is consistantly voted one of the best 'sex scenes' on film.

Menawhile borrow the complete (VHS) version if you have a way to watch it & try the soundtrack or even better visit New Orleans itself...

Would be 10 stars if complete. Fabulous film. This edition (though pre 2004) completely omits final scene before credits (essential to plot), no extras and not wide screen - try and find un-mutilated copy. My search goes on...

Elsewhere on Amazon you will see that someone says that "Sea of Love" Sea Of Love [DVD] [1990]has the best stand up love scene ever. Well, The Big easy has the best ever love scene. Both contain Ellen Barkin.
That aside (and that is not the reason for either buying the DVD or the 5 star review)the Big easy is indeed a film to see again and again. The story is simple, but set against the Cajun bagdrop and with a great soundtrack, it makes for really good, enjoyable viewing. Quaid does a good job of putting a lovable character on screen and Barkin is eminently watchable, even if out-acted by Quaid. I was lucky enough to buy this when the final scene was still on the disc and I can confirm that, without it, the film loses direction.

I'm not a big film buff, but 'The Big Easy' is one of those rare films than can be watched many times. One of the big selling points is the location. N'Awlins makes a nice change from NY, LA and Chicago as a setting for cop thrillers. On top of that is the cajun angle and the cajun soundtrack. The acting is top notch - Dennis Quaid is at his best as the laid back Remy and Ellen Barkin is just sex on legs. Best of all is the story line which has many twists and turns that only reveal the identity of the killers towards the end. Excellent stuff!

This colorful and fast moving film from director Jim McBride about an only slightly corrupt cop in 'The Big Easy' and the pretty Assistant District Attorney sent to investigate the department is filled with cajun spice and atmosphere. The lines between right and wrong are blurred like a rainy windshield in this lightning paced and very sexy cop film.
Dennis Quaid gives a terrific performance as Remy McSwain, a second generation cop who sold out early on in his career, accepting it as the norm but not letting it hinder him from doing his job. When the prim and sexy Ellen Barkin arrives on the scene in the form of D.A. Anne Osborne he attempts to wine and dine his way out of trouble as bodies start piling up in an apparent drug war.
The sexy encounters between Remy and the shy Anne blend seamlessly with some very brutal crime scenes and a lot of New Orlean's music to propel this film at a breezy and very enjoyable pace. When Remy's own corruption is exposed their relationship becomes more complicated as he tampers with evidence and gets off. But her comments to him that he is no longer one of the 'good guys' causes him to take a serious look at himself. When cops are discovered to be behind all the recent drug trouble, the answers will hit far too close to home.
A very unique cop thriller that manages to maintain a light and breezy ambiance throughout, this is one of the most memorable films of it's kind. It's spicy flavor goes down easy and makes you crave more. The supporting cast that includes Ned Beatty, John Goodman, and Lisa Jane Persky offer fine support in this very seductive and one of a kind film you must see. Pick this one up today!
