I have just watched Big Game, the Samuel L. Jackson/Onni Tommila film, directed by Jalmari Helander. It is very much a Finnish film, and reinforces my opinion that Finnish cinema is a repertory company, with Helander at the helm. But what a quality company they are! This is a great edge of your seat action thriller, but with comedy, pride, and the interest holding quirkiness that is strong in many of Scandinavia's films. There are few actors who can hold their own opposite Samuel L. Jackson, but Onni Tommila, a rising star with a clear aptitude for comedy, action, and drama, here proved himself equal to the task! Five stars out of five!

Samuel L. Jackson plays the POTUS. He is considered a feckless leader in the war on terror and as such, those who oppose the terrorists have planned to kill him. His plane is shot down over the mountains of Finland. At the same time Oskari (Onni Tommila) turned 13 and is going to become a man by hunting big game. He is alone in the woods with a bow and and about four arrows. He barely has the strength to pull back the bow. He rescues the POTUS from his escape pod and the two of them are on the run for their lives.

The film was okay. I was hoping the kid would do some Rambo/Home Alone type stuff, i.e. set traps etc. but it didn't happen. The film is basically kid safe. At one point Samuel L. Jackson says "Mother F" and stops short of completing the phrase. 3 1/2 stars.

Films such as this are often under-rated however though never in line for any awards, the film is hugely entertaining
in my view.
Those that watch films purely to be entertained and don't necessarily set out to fault the story-line wont be disappointed.
'Oskari' (Onni Tommila) is the son of an accomplished 'Finnish' Hunter who had proved himself at the age of just thirteen,
it is now the turn of his son 'Oskari' who now approaches his thirteenth birthday to go into the forest an prove himself a worthy hunter.
Meanwhile the U,S President 'William Alan Moore' (Samuel L Jackson) is on AIR-Force-One on route to a meeting in Finland
unaware that the Presidential Plane is about to become under attack from a terrorist-cell.
Air-Force-One is built to counter such an attack, however there is a traitor on-board who has disabled the defence systems, the
President is jettisoned in an escape-pod which hurtles toward the forest.
'Oskari' is the first to find the pod and releases the President from it, an unlikely relationship between the President and the
thirteen year-old hunter develops quickly, though 'Oskari' still needs to complete the task he'd been sent in the forest to complete
still needing to prove himself to both his Father and their small community.
However it soon becomes obvious that they are being hunted by terrorists along with a once trusted member of the Presidents team
now turned traitor.
Back in the States the Vice-President and aids are desperately trying to locate the Presidents whereabouts if he'd survived the crash.
'Oskari' will put aside his task to help the President.
This is an enjoyable watch, some action sequences along the way though the film is more about the young thirteen year-old proving
his manhood through courage,

Imagine a film that combines Die Hard / Kingsman / Independence Day / "the kid" from Indiana Jones and of course tells the world that America Rules - Terrorists Suck. This film tries to do all of this in one movie, and single handedly fails, instantly turning many classic movie moments into clichés. But it fails in a most gloriously entertaining way. If you want a laugh at an accidental homage of almost an entire genre of great movies then watch this. It's hilarious in the way that it made me think of the above films, and others I love. Maybe that's point!

Big Game might not win any Oscars but then again I don’t think this film was made for awards season but as an action adventure film Big Game manages to entertain and with a run time of under 90 minutes the film doesn't get dragged down by boring sub-plots. The film might not fully capture its goal of recreating the old 1980s adventure films that despite their ratings still contained a lot of violence but it is still great to see a brilliant adventure film like this.

The cast is pretty good with appearances from Felicity Huffman, Victor Garber and Jim Broadbent in tiny roles that could have been played by any actor or actress. It’s weird seeing a supporting cast this good wasted in such minor roles. Jim Broadbent’s main function and only function for that matter is to provide exposition (the insertion of important background information within a story; for example, information about the setting, characters' backstories, prior plot events, and historical context). This definition I got for exposition sums up his role perfectly with his character not uttering one word that doesn't provide information about the plot. Then again he is lucky in that he does have an actual role; Felicity Huffman and Victor Garber literally do nothing. The main cast; Samuel L Jackson, Oskari and Ray Stevenson more than make up for the other characters lack of a role. Ray Stevenson is a great villain with your usually villainous backstory. You know it’s the story where the antagonist is disenchanted with the government so becomes a traitor, or decides to sell out his country for the money. Here, Stevenson (Morris) does both.

The film relies on the pairing of Samuel L Jackson and Oskari in the lead roles. Samuel L Jackson is on form as the President while Oskari is brilliant as his sidekick.
