DEATH IS JUST THE BEGINNING

Nekromantik is the one-of-a-kind shock classic from cult director Jörg Buttgereit, weaving the tale of Rob Schmadtke (Daktari Lorenz), a young man who finds himself competing for the affections of his girlfriend with a putrefying cadaver.

An employee of Joe's Streetcleaning Agency, a company which cleans up after grisly accidents, Rob takes advantage of his profession to indulge in his chosen hobby - the collection of body parts. Then, one day Rob, brings home an entire decomposing corpse, much to the delight of girlfriend Betty. There follows a twisted love triangle, resulting in some of the most shocking scenes ever committed to celluloid.

Nearly 30 years after its original release, Arrow Video is proud to present this classic of underground horror cinema finally classified for UK release in its fully unexpurgated form.

I love horror cinema, I love gore movies, I love challenging films. Necromantik fails at all of the above however and ultimately only serves as a dated curiousity. At around 70mins long it still manages to drag despite the bizarre sex scenes and poorly executed gore. I personally didn't think it was shocking, mainly because it all plays out a little bit silly, despite trying to be serious. The 2 instances of animal cruelty (one involving a cat that is obviously faked, and one absolutely real killing/skinning/gutting of a rabbit) add nothing worthy of note in my opinion and only feature for extra shock value.
For all that though Necromantik is not the worst I've seen, hence the 2 stars. It's memorable because it's rubbish while simultaneously having a few scenes that every fan of extreme movies will want to see.
Not a gorefest by any means so be warned if you are expecting wall to wall blood and guts. It's more subtle and perverse, but intentionally so. It's this I think that gives it more character over the gross-out torture porn genre movies and the Japanese spatter films. But when all's said and done it's still mediocre.
Don't buy this film, watch on YouTube for free instead.

I loved Nekromantik, a film that was made as a protest to the censorship in Germany. The film contains some animal cruelty (a rabbit getting killed and skinned, a cat(not real) getting beat against a wall and his inners dripping into a bath that the lead character is bathing in. It contains sexual scenes with corpses which are both funny and disgusting. His girlfriend gets so excited with the sex she runs off with the corpse. So after not been impressed with a lone night out at the cinema watching a rape/slasher film with a very serious audience he picks up a hooker, takes her to a graveyard, kills and rapes the dead hooker. The film has a dark comic value throughout and includes most of the sex and death that extreme horror fans like

Nekromantik is the controversial horror film that shocked the world in 1987, when it was banned in Germany, censored in Japan and simultaneously became a huge underground hit in the US (now long out of print.). Nekromantik tells the story of Rob (Daktari Lorenz) who works at a street-cleaning Agency, who visits roadside accidents to clean up the scene. Incidentally, Rob collects the body parts and takes them to his small apartment, where he and his girlfriend Betty (Beatrice M.) can then comit acts of necrophilia. When Rob presents a complete corpse taken out of a swamp, their undying love reaches its peak, but soon after Betty starts liking the corpse and leaves Rob, which takes him to the sick end of his destruction. Nekromantik is a great feature film debut for German director Jörg Buttgereit. Not a common film at all, Nekromantik is utterly original and makes you want to see it over and over again! No doubt the gore and scenes of necrophilia were utterly disgusting and brilliant, it's guaranteed to shock and offend those who have a weak stomach. The extremely low budget also gives the film a really raw and dirty atmosphere like watching faces of death, but I'm going to be honest the slow motion shots were rubbish, I guess Jörg was trying to be artistic but let's face it the film was made for extreme horror fans and gore hounds. Being banned in many countries the most people only see a depraved and disgusting horror movie in it, but to me it is a disturbing, but simultaneously beautiful film about a weird fetish! The whole film is surrounded by an almost apocalyptic poetry and the wonderful piano score emphazises the sinister death-is-everywhere atmosphere perfectly! and the ending is guaranteed to make you cringe, gives a new meaning to the word climax.Read more ›

One of the worlds most important film makers tackles the subject of necrophilia. A sensitive subject handled in a sensitive, shot with warmth and humour, by a director not afraid to graphically portray his subject matter. Hopefully this will lead to relrases for his other works including, Der Todesking, Necromantic 2 and Schram. If you want to see what a young director can do when he does not want to take the lazy options, (found footage, slasher, zombie.) and applies talent to a subject truly challenging then this movie is a must see and one that will haunt you forever.

How have I missed this little Gem before (I have just watched it), it goes straight to my number 1 position for gruesome, gross-out films, brilliant. I thought it might be a bit offensive but silly, but it was classy, well acted and well directed, a HORROR Film, with (for a change) a satisfying amount of HORROR, I wish there were more like this, I'm a bit shocked it almost eluded me, for strong stomach's only, highly recommended. Try watching it while eating your evening meal, yummy.
