Product Description

SS EXPERIMENT CAMP has arrived back to UK shelves uncut, uncensored and ready to scandalise a new generation of gore-hungry viewers! With this said, the flick that kicked off the entire 'video nasty' scandal is not afraid to show both the horrors of fascism and the struggles of heroism in the shadow of World War 2's vilest violence. Add to this mix a subtle tongue-in-cheek splat-stick mentality (after all the best way to get your own back at Nazis is to laugh at them!), and the sort of palpable

Postwar Italian guilt that highlighted the entire Rome-based boom in Third Reich exploitation romps, and you have a curious schlock-totem.

SS EXPERIMENT CAMP may have upset the censors back in 1976, but today it stands tall as a must-see example of bad taste VHS-era bloodshed... suitable for steel-stomachs and scholars of the rental shop era!

Extras:

  • BRAND NEW HD Master
  • Uncompressed LPCM English Soundtrack
  • Uncompressed LPCM Italian Soundtrack with English Subtitles
  • Reversible Sleeve with alternative art
  • Includes a Collectible 300gsm Original Poster Post Card
  • Booklet Notes by Calum Waddell

Gloriously cheesy and tasteless nostalgia trip to the days before home entertainment was classified/censored and you could pick up the likes of this from your local rental shop. Sure it's poorly acted, badly dubbed and shoddily directed but you can't ignore the sheer poor taste of it all - still likely to cause some offence almost 40 years on. That said, for lovers of exploitation cinema this is an essential buy. Blu Ray quality is excellent considering the age/quality of original source and those horror fans of my generation with memories of seeing this on a scratchy VHS will be well impressed. A guilty pleasure, a nostalgic if dodgy trip back to the glory days of the video nasty.

Sergio Garrone's infamous and controversial ex video nasty "SS Experiment Camp" makes it's high definition Blu ray debut here from cult movie distributor 88 Films as part of their Italian Collection range. Presented completely uncut and uncensored 88 Films also provide for the first time the option of listening to the original Italian audio track as well as including an insert art card and reversible cover sleeve with the original back in the day video nasty artwork which was more than likely the cause of the titles banner headlines rather than the content of Garrone's movie itself.

Synopsis:
For Italian moviemakers the atrocities of World War II and in particular the exploits of the Nazi Party began in full swing during the early 1970s with such surprisingly classy (and respectable) pieces as Tinto Brass' "Salon Kitty" or the Dirk Bogard starrer "The Night Porter" (with the Ameicans trumping them with the grim 1968 "Love Camp 7" or the outrageous Ilsa series). At the opposite end of the scale came the short lived Italian Nazisploitation flicks some of which tried to replicate the decadence and high-drama of the earlier films (The Gestapo's Last Orgy immediately springs to mind) but were more akin (but less glossy) to the Ilsa movies and nothing more than glorified women in prison films albeit with an abundance of Nazi uniforms, swastikas and pictures of the Führer on display.

When I was a kid in the 1980s this film was legendary due its banned status and inclusion on the list of video nasties. So now finally it's available on blu-ray and the hysteria has died down. So what do we have? Nothing that would shock anyone these days. A clearly fake 'camp' with a mad commander experimenting on the inmates and a romantic sub plot. It's actually quite tedious in places, but the pure trashiness and the stupidity of it makes it compelling viewing. Once. I'm not sure I would want to sit through it again! Poorly plotted, awfully scripted and badly dubbed. What more do you want?

Yes I owned it on a beat up video in the nasties days but I was never very fond of it. It was one of the bootleg films you had to own but after viewing it again I haven't changed my mind. The subject might be in the poorest taste but most of the film consists of men in their underpants and women being asked to follow you know who or else. The cheesy dubbing however makes it watchable. I like cheesy dubbing and this has some classic lines. When comparing to films like Hostel this seems quite tame nowadays. There are much better women in prison films out there if this is your sort of thing.

Near the end of World War 2, the Nazi's set up a camp that is to hold only women. The purpose of this assignment is for the Germans to attempt to make a master race between a group of fit and athletic Germans and some unfortunate Jewish girls.

This was the first of a brief craze of this Nazi Exploitation films that came flooding out of Italian in the mid 1970's after the surprise hit of the Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS and Saloon Kitty. Director Sergio Garrone who made some very good Spaghetti Westerns such as No Room to Die and Strangers Gundown directs this trash and its sad to see him making something as poor as this.

The plot is pretty ridiculous and we have some pointless experiments taken out on the Jewish girls which don't really have any relevance or point. One is put on a electric chair and another has what I think was air blown at a high pressure into her ear until she dies. Then we have the typical female lesbian warden who in one point has sex with one of the prisoners.

In the sub plot we have a German Sergeant called Helmut, who falls in love with one of the girls he is forced to have sex with. Then he starts to despise the experiments his fellow comrades are carrying out but if he refuses to take part he will be sent to the Russian front. The evil Col. Von Kleiben is the head of the camp and in a flashback we learn that he had his balls bitten off by a women who he was attempting to rape, so he decides he wants a balls transplant and Helmut is his unlucky choice.

The film seems a lot longer than its 94 minute running time, but at least at the end we get abit of action. After Helmut discovers what has happened to him he confronts Von Kleiben saying one of the most funny lines ever said in a movie 'What have you been doing with my Balls?
