The late, great Lucio Fulci (with a little uncredited help from Zombie Creeping Flesh helmer Bruno Mattei) returned to his living dead roots with Zombie Flesh Eaters 2 (AKA Zombi 3) the long awaited sequel to Zombie Flesh Eaters (AKA Zombi 2). However, just as Zombi 2 was inspired by Dawn of the Dead, with Zombie Flesh Eaters 2 Fulci spins his own terrific take on another Hollywood hit: Return of the Living Dead.

The end result is a fast-paced, plasma-packed popcorn romp in which contagious fumes consequent in an invasion of flesh-feasting ghouls. A classic carnage-ridden splatter caper in its own right, Zombie Flesh Eaters is ripe for reappraisal and arrives on blu-ray in a worldwide HD debut that looks finger-licking fabulous! For Fulci fans it's a no-brainer this gory, gut-tearing gem is an essential addition to your collection.

The Lucio Fulci and Bruno Mattei directorial amalgamation that is the 1988 produced Zombi 3 (aka Zombie Flesh Eaters 2) makes its Blu ray debut here from cult UK indie label 88 Films as part of their Italian Collection line. Presented completely uncut and uncensored whilst restoring a brief and relatively gory three minute opening this marks the longest version ever seen in the UK and includes a handful of new supplementary features, collectable artwork and a reversible cover sleeve.

Synopsis:
The movie opens in a US Military run research centre located in the jungles of South East Asia where a bunch of scientists have developed a deadly toxin called "Death 1" presumably to be used as chemical warfare which causes those who come into contact with it to turn into flesh eating ghouls. As the opening credits roll the viewer is treated to a far from elaborate theft of the said deadly agent by unnamed terrorists. The security kill all but one of the thieves who makes a run for the jungle with the virus contained within a metal canister. Pursued by helicopter the man is shot at but unfortunately during the confusion the case containing the virus is damaged causing the poor fellow to become contaminated with "Death 1" which soon begins to work it's magic. Seeking refuge in a nearby hotel he slowly transforms into a drooling flesh eating zombie but of course it isn't long before the army arrive, clear the hotel and find the infected party before he can spread the disease.

The Italian zombie craze produced some pearls and a lot of garbage. This is certainly one of the most inept but the levels of cheese hit a glorious sweet spot. It would be tough for me to definitely choose between Zombie Flesh Eaters 2 and Hell of the Living Dead as my absolute favourite bad Z movie, so all I will do is recommend it to all fans of bad dubbing, shamelessly derivative Italian rip-offs and doom laden heroes shooting from the hip, or at least pretending to in movies that lack the budget for them to fire blanks.

Transfer is decent given the soft quality of half of the movie (it was shot by two separate directors, Fulci having pulled out due to illness) and it is the full length uncut version so top marks to 88 films for their work.

Extras are lightweight but include a decent interview with genre fave Catriona MacColl, despite her not being in it!

PLOT...
When a terrorist's body, infected with a stolen chemical, is recovered by the US military, the corpse is cremated, unintentionally releasing the virus/bacteria into the atmosphere over a small island. Soon the infected populace mutate into flesh-hungry zombies, and a trio of soldiers on leave must team up with a group of tourists and board themselves up in an abandoned hotel as they try to fend off the agile and aggressive living dead.

Zombi 3 AKA Zombie Flesh Eaters 2 is another classic 80's gory splatter horror from one of the masters Lucio Fulci (City of the Living Dead, The House by the Cemetery) its a classic cross between Dawn of the dead and return of the living dead, plenty of green oozy blood and guts and gore, your typical story of course, there are so many great zombie movies from around the 80's and some are samey but I think this movie has a good fun story and the cast is likable, if you love these types of movies then you cant go wrong and does essentially need to sit in your collection as much as the rest, it certainly now looks even better on Blu-ray.

Great picture quality for the Blu-ray HD transfer.
Features include commentary, Q&A, Interviews, alternate titles.
You get your usual collectable post card and reversible cover art.
If your lucky enough to get a copy of the 88Films website exclusive version it comes with a very nice slipcase and a bonus 4-hour disc Lucio Fulci remembered, Region B only, 95-mins, 1988. English language.

this was the third film in the zombi lineup , actually the first one was romero's dawn of the dead. and then 'zombie' , both of which are classics of the horror genre. This one is NOT a classic at all. IT's a lower budget film and it's just not as good as the first two. However it's a decent gruesome Italian horror flick and it delivers in pure fun. the first two movie were full on movies. this one uses horrible stock footage in it. to pad out the time. SO it's a shlock film , but a good shlock film. The next one is similiar to this too. But it's nowhere on blu yet. I would buy it htough. I do like 'nightmare city ' better than this one, it's from the same era but it's better by far. The movie has never looked this good though since the 1980's screenings. Lets hope the put out five and six on one disc. Because those two are even less well done than this one.

At last - the full 95 minute version of Fulci's follow-up to his earlier Zombie Flesh Eaters, in a decent widescreen transfer and with some good extras.

Whilst this pseudo-sequel might not feature some of the memorable set-pieces of its predecessor, it nevertheless scores points for being much better paced with some great (if humorous) action sequences. The brightly lit sunny settings, and the deadly-virus-let-loose-by-the-nefarious-military familiar plot, add up to a very enjoyable piece of B-movie entertainment with decent production values. There are lashings of gore and some of the acting will remind you of sub-80s TV dramas, but this is well worth a watch and, unusually for a horror film, will cheer you up on a rainy afternoon.

Recommended.
