Product Description

Nine sexy, shocking, and always intriguing films from Spain's most exciting queer filmmaker. Take an explicit trip through a cruising ground in the body of a curious guy, peek in to the bedroom of a couple as they discover themselves and each other, take your place on the dance floor in a sexually charged club, or watch the aftermath of a casual hook up in the back of a car. These stories and more feature in this stirring collection- including Scaffolding, Fuckbuddies, Consequence/Consequences, Wall, Une Sensation de vide, 1941, Dishonoured Bodies, Perfect Day and Cannibals, Juanma Carrillo's shorts have been shown at galleries and festivals around the world, including London's own Barbican.

Juanma Carrillo is a writer and director who has made a number of short films, normally with a gay element to them. Here we have a collection of eight that show the breadth and depth of his ouvre.

We have `Scaffolding' a sort of love story, with great music all from the Elefant record label and featuring `The School'. One about two men who meet just for sex, some arthouse dance and a disco scene. All of these are filmed beautifully.

We also have a satire on World War 2 called `1941' - this is stylistically very stunning. Two things seem to run through these films, one is minimal dialogue and the other is men with beards - which is a strange combination. The films range from stunning to charming - some are deigned to shock, but I must have a tough skin as there was nothing here I thought pushed that particular envelope.

I did find some of them a bit meandering though and I know that makes me a Philistine, but watching a man walk around with a lantern for ages is not really a show stopper. That said some of the slow motion scenes at the night club were so visually arresting that you could watch again immediately. There is a lot of sex going on here which may float your boat, and it is fair to say most of these will make you think. Either way a very interesting selection that I feel generous in giving 4 stars to, but there is a lot here to see merit in - in Spanish with sub titles on the few occasions anyone actually speaks.

I'm afraid this is another failure from tla releasing, who have brought out so many excellent films; however, recently there have been more misses than hits. Juanma Carrillo makes short films that are very much the kind of thing you might see on a loop on a gallery wall: mainly showing men kissing, with minimal dialogue and very little story. Attention is given to lighting. He seems to favour scaffolding and walls that have a rough, abandoned look, or single locations: the disco, the back of a car, a cruising ground, a snowy landscape in 1941 in Europe. Although individual images are certainly striking, only one of the films really held my interest, called Scaffolding. One called Wall was not bad either. Both these films show men getting to know each other, with emphasis on small gestures. 1941 was incomprehensible to me, while others where you can see what is going on are so slight there is really nothing there. He seems to favour experimental soundtracks that rise in agitation towards some kind of revelation at the end, as in Cannibals - this one does have quite a good end credit sequence to Arvo Part, but before that the endless cruising of the camera around men cruising in a wooded area was so boring and repetitive that it was difficult to stay with it. I would definitely stick to the Boys On Film series and give these a miss ...

I feel that after watching the 9 short films in one viewing I was left feeling as if I was in Limbo as selected films were very watchable whereas others I found my mind wandering as I really could not make any sense of what was supposed to be happening. This may be a set of films that it is better to watch one by one with a break between each of them!

Sorry to say this is the worse purchase I have recently made. I found it totally boring and it will not be coming out of it's box again!
