STROMBOLI LAND OF GOD (DVD)
A film by Roberto Rossellini

Stromboli Land of God follows Karen (Ingrid Bergman), a young woman from Lithuania who marries fisherman Antonio (Mario Vitale) to escape from a prison camp after being promised a great life on his home island of Stromboli. Karen soon discovers the island is harsh and barren, with the locals acting in a hostile manner towards this strange, foreign woman, Karen increasingly becomes despondent, looking for ways to escape this new life.

This Italian neorealism classic is renowned for being the result of a letter that Bergman wrote to Rossellini, in which she spoke of her admiration for his work and how she wanted to make a film with him. The letter consequently sparked the infamous affair between Rossellini and Bergman which began during the production of the film.

This digitally remastered edition also contains Francesco Patierno's 2012 documentary The War of the Volcanoes which explores, through the use of rich archive footage, the intense and dramatic love story which took place during the production of Stromboli Land of God

Special Features

  • Digitally remastered presentation
  • The War of the Volcanoes (Francesco Patierno, 2012, 55 mins): documentary which charts the relationships between Hollywood superstar Ingrid Bergman, world famous director Roberto Rossellini and Italy's most beloved actress Anna Magnani

I purchased this film mainly because I had recently visited Stromboli and having climbed to the crater
of the volcano wanted to see how the island had changed. I was pleasantly surprised watching the film,
which was dramatic and thought provoking. The fact that the main cast were
not actors but local islanders and that Ingrid Bergman was the only 'star' made the film, in my opinion,
more authentic.

A strange film...One of these films you either love or hate I personally love it...So atmospheric. Miss Bergman is excellent as usual. Sadly my wife watched in quite some time ago and hopes she never has to watch it again.

I'm really surprised that recent customers are having problems obtaining a copy of this iconic film except via Korea. I have a video cassette of it and am thankful that I still have it. Ingrid Bergman acted her role in English, that much I do know. How much of the other dialogue was dubbed into English from Italian I'm not sure. The other actors were not actors at all, which was the way Rossellini wanted it. The message of this film is at least as good as that of "Open City". It's a dark film - literally! and it was unfortunate that its quality as film was overshadowed by the brouhaha over Bergman's love affair with [and subsequent marriage to] Rossellini. I've watched the film many times in order to soak up Bergman's performance as the frustrated refugee, who marries an Italian fisherman out of desperation and finally, after struggles with herself, accepts her new life and that of the child she is expecting. Worth seeing more than once!

We bought it because of Ingrid Bergman but have not enjoyed it. The acting seemed poor and the plot was worse.
