The New Girlfriend is an amazing film, possibly the best Ozon has ever made. Having just watched it, I feel quite elated at its daring, its humour, the beauty of many of the scenes. You're left uncertain what to feel at times, but it holds the attention in the most compelling manner. It amounts to an exploration of gender, transvestism, desire, friendship, loyalty - well, there is so much in a mise-en-scene so elegant, that in itself leaves you floating on air. The film starts with a quick traversal of the girlhood friendship of Claire and Laura, then marriage for both girls, the christening of Laura's daughter Lucie, Laura's illness and death, and Claire's distress at this. The first ten minutes look like perusing a photograph album, held together by a score that has the effect of Philip Glass's music in The Hours - everything is contained in its sweep. The tone seems serious, however it doesn't remain this way for long. The shift into something else is deftly handled, with a sense of breaking taboos. Laura's husband David starts to live out a cross-dressing fantasy, while Claire's initial disapproval quickly changes to delight at girly shopping trips together. Anais Demoustier, who plays this role, is able to get a marvellous expression like someone who has been caught doing something she shouldn't be but is thoroughly enjoying it. But the real revelation is Romain Duris, who handles his transformation with grace, femininity, irony: the tone is incredible in its lustre and refinement. He looks beautiful, and manages to play it both straight and with a comic awareness, maintained through flights of extraordinary tenderness in which desire, love and identity are turned every which way.

Claire has a best friend in Laura, they have been close since they met as children and have grown and lived their lives together. We start the film with Laura’s funeral – she leaves behind a loving husband and a baby daughter. Claire has promised to care for her friend’s family and after much grieving she goes round to the house to comfort David.
*Mild plot spoiler*
Once there she makes a discovery about David that will change all of their lives. Now to say any more would be a plot spoiler but if you notice that Romain Duris is credited with both a male and female part in this film it is a good indicator of where this is going.

Written by Ruth Rendell this is actually a very warm and caring film that has the air of realism throughout. It is the sort of film that pulls you in and keeps you hooked. In French with good to average sub titles regarding translation, you will also get some good make up and fashion tips. I really enjoyed this film and so find it easy to recommend.

The opening scenes of the film show the funeral of Laura. Flashbacks during the eulogy given by her best friend Claire, quickly set out the back story of two best childhood friends who have loved, married and in Laura's case had a child before she died. Claire promises to be there for the child Lucie and Laura's husband David. Grief and depression initially prevent her from making good on the promise, until one day she calls on David and finds (****POTENTIAL SPOILER****) he is dressed like Laura while feeding Lucie. It's not really a spoiler to mention this, as the film does not try to keep you in suspense but rather deals with the response to these circumstances.

What follows is the development of Claire and David's friendship and David's development as alter ego Virginia. It asks questions about the nature of their relationship - is he a replacement for Laura in Claire's life? Is she more attracted to him as David or Virginia and what were her true feelings for Laura? It's beautifully shot, everything is very stylish but also often quite melodramatic. Two stand-out cliches are how Claire brings David out of a coma in record time and the '7 years later' epilogue - not a plot device I'm fond of.

Overall it's a feast for the eyes, if not for the brain.

An excellent film, funny, poignant and moving, AND far far better than The Danish Girl!! I go to the Cinema most weeks with a group of friends and when we saw this we all gave it a 10 which is very unusual for us.
