Product Description

Product Description

MEET THE MANIAC & HIS FRIEND.

Nearly a decade before he donned Freddy Krueger s famous red and green sweater, horror icon Robert Englund delivered a supremely sleazy performance in Eaten Alive another essay in taut Southern terror from Tobe Hooper, director of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

Deep in the Louisiana bayou sits the ramshackle Starlight Hotel, destination of choice for those who like to check in but not check out! Bumbling Judd, the patron of this particular establishment, may seem like a good-natured ol Southern gent but he has a mean temper on him, and a mighty large scythe to boot...

Oozing atmosphere from its every pore (the entire film was shot on a sound-stage which lends it a queasy, claustrophobic feel), Eaten Alive matches The Texas Chain Saw Massacre for sheer insanity helped in no small part by some marvellous histrionics from Chain Saw star Marilyn Burns and William Finley (Phantom of the Paradise).

DIRECTOR-APPROVED SPECIAL EDITION CONTENTS:

  • Brand new 2K restoration of the film from the original camera negative, approved by director Tobe Hooper

****Please note that this review is for the Arrow Blu ray/DVD Combo pack and not the old DVD edition****
Tobe Hooper's 1976 classic 'Eaten Alive' makes it's high definition debut here from Arrow Films. Better known in the UK as 'Deathtrap' the title under which Hooper's film made it's way onto the BBFC's list of banned titles and the DPPs famous final 39 most wanted VHS tapes during the ridiculous furore that was the video nasty debate. Thankfully this is now presented uncut, uncensored and looking better than ever with a fantastic new 2k restoration from the original 35mm negative. As a footnote it is worth mentioning that Arrow Films have released Eaten Alive simultaneously in the UK and the US with both releases being identical in content and quality. Both versions also contain a DVD copy of the movie, an insert booklet and a reversible sleeve with both new and classic art work.

Synopsis:
Swapping the dust, rattlesnakes and sun scorched rural locations of Texas for the dark, damp and sultry bayous of Louisiana, Eaten Alive was Tobe Hooper's follow up movie to his phenomenally successful 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre'. Although different in style and execution from it's far more well known predecessor, Eaten Alive is still brimming with atmosphere and blacker than black humour which Hooper entwines discretely throughout to create a unique and facinating movie set in perpetual twighlight with unusual characters, a nightmarish one set location and another of Hooper's own unnerving home made music soundtracks. Indeed this could be thought of as his final low budget indie movie before the bright lights of the major studios that produced such popular mainstream titles as 'The Funhouse', 'Poltergeist' and the TV movie favourite 'Salems Lot'.

This movie is really strange. The first scene in the movie shows a young Robert Englund trying to get a prostitute to do an "unspeakable" act! The prostitute who we guess isn't really a prostitute but a poor girl who has run from home leaves the brothel and goes to a creepy looking hotel run by Neville Brand who goes all crazy after first being perfectly normal and disposes of the hooker by feeding her to his pet crocodile!!! The father and sister comes to look for the sister and strange things begin to happen! Neville brand is fantastic as the mentally deranged Judd who for most the film mutters utter tosh!Robert Englund is good as Buck the Hooker loving rascal who books into Judds hotel with a young girl and they don't even get down to it as Buck also meets a sticky end! Look out for stars in the movie such as Stuart Whitman, Mel Ferrer and Carolyn Jones as the brothel madam! All in all it is a strange but entertaining movie with crazy dialogue and an even crazier musical score!

First up, this Blu Ray transfer looks really great, so if you are a fan of the movie you will be over the moon with the release. The scenes with the red lighting in particular look great and are reminiscent of Italian horror cinema. The film is really strange tonally, the soundtrack consists mainly of random synthesizer noises and many of the characters are suffering from extreme mental breakdown and display highly irrational behaviour. I was surprised that the film reminded me of Eraserhead in that sense. What lets the film down for me ultimately is that there is very little story going on here so by the end of the film I was more than ready for it to finish. Texas Chainsaw Massacre had some similar feel but worked better because it had a more realistic tone. The Hills Have Eyes also succeeded in bringing some semblance of weight and drama to a rather simple idea. Unfortunately Eaten Alive doesn't really achive this but if you love grimy 70s horror purely for the atmosphere this may be well up your street.
