Product Description

Product Description

From the warped and wacky mind of Monty Python alum Eric Idle comes a wickedly funny case of mistaken identity.

Eric Idle stars with Rick Moranis, Barbara Hershey, Catherine Zeta-Jones and John Cleese in this madcap romp the Los Angeles Times dubbed 'irreverent, fun to watch...a killer!'

At a wild party during the 60's, baby Thomas Henry Butterfly Rainbow Peace (a.k.a. the 15th Duke of Bournemouth) is accidentally 'misplaced' by his rich hippie mum and dad. When the wrong baby is claimed, the real heir winds up being raised by a poor Pakistani family, while the 'heir apparent' grows up in America with a silver spoon in his mouth.

Once Tommy Patel (Idle) learns that he, not Henry Martin (Moranis), is the true Duke of Bournemouth, he'll do anything to get back what he's lost!

Fortunately for Henry, Tommy's a pretty inept assassin. Unfortunately for them both, Tommy's seedy lawyer Shadgrind (Cleese) is a tad more adept!

Add to the mix a scandalous, nymphomaniacal Duchess (Hershey), a gorgeous gold digger (Zeta-Jones), plus a host of assorted loonies, and you have a 'Pythonesque' cavalcade of silliness. Can Tommy regain his Dukedom, survive Shadgrind's schemes, avoid being seduced by his own unwitting mom, and marry the girl of his dream's?

Find out for yourself. You'll split your sides laughing!

I wonder why movies like A Fish Called Wanda become a blockbuster, and others, like Splitting Heirs for instance, remain largely unknown. The movie is excellent. The actors are wonderfully funny. I think in every aspect it should be in league with the likes of Fish called Wanda. Not only because of the participation of John Cleese...
BTW, having recently watched Kind Hearts and Coronets, I couldn't help but find similarities in the plot. The outcome was different, but the protagonist's intention was the same. For me, it's always a treat to find links between films or books that I like. Definitely recommendable.

I've loved this film for many years - a hidden gem full of many moments of enjoyment, and have just bought the DVD version through here to replace my old VHS one.

But, do be aware that the Danish version has a flaw. The soundtrack is the original English one, but, unlike any other DVD I have seen, there seems to be no way to switch the Danish subtitles off.

I suppose you could say that this is a bit loosely put together, but never 'dull' as someone wrote! There are LOTS of lovely moments, lots of surprises, lots of fun: like the fact that - white-skinned, fair-haired and blue-eyed - he believes himself to be an Asian until his mother sees the symbolically signficant silver spoon and tells him he was adopted ... I love what Eric Idle has done and though I'm not a John Cleese fan, his contribution is enough to satisfy those who are, and not enough to disturb the rest of us! Odd that it's not better-known, I only found it by chance: but well worth a place in anyone's collection and I will certainly watch it several times a year ... ;-)

It's that old case of mistaken identity for this atypical seventies British comedy finding its way to 1993.

In the sixties an Earls baby is left in a restaurant and the parents take the wrong baby from the police station. Years later, Eric Idle is living with an Indian family, and Rick Moranis is next in line as the new Earl.

But a revelation Is revealed to Idle, and he does all he can to have what is rightfully his.

If you are fond of those old cheesy sitcoms from the seventies like Bless This House, Man Of The House, and in some instances Rising Damp, you will find something to enjoy in this harmless piece of fluff.

Just don't expect something as classy and as hilariously groundbreaking as Monty Python, because the jokes here all based on Innuendo, race, sex, and culture, and it wears it's politically incorrect narrative proudly on its sleeve.

It's a pure vanity project for Idle. He sleeps with Zeta Jones, has all the best lines, and even sings the ruddy theme tune. Oh, and Barbara Hershey fancies him, which is a little cringeworthy seeing as it's his mother, and he's older than her in real life anyway.

Its clear to see why this film vanished without a trace on release, it has so much material to offend so many people. He's adopted by and Indian family, and being a stereotypical British farce, they live above and own a shop, and eat curry. But the big joke is that he eats Fish and Chips!! The pinnacle of the British dietary intake.

It's rubbish for sure, but I wasn't expecting anything more. I was expecting silly jokes, seeing old TV favourites in cameo roles, and of course, to see Rick Moranis as the token American who everyone loves.

It's a very dated film indeed, but it's funny in a 'you know you shouldn't laugh, but you do anyway' kind of way
