This is from Peccadillo who often bring us some very interesting and rewarding films. This is the latest in their gay short film collections and features films from around the World - America, Sweden, Australia and the UK etc.

The synopsis for all ten of these films is above in the product description so I will not repeat it here. Now the quality here varies from lightweight to fairly impressive so it is hard to gauge where to rate the collection. My favourite was `Vis a Vis' from Australia which was very original and very warm. `Kissing Drew' from the US and I thought was a missed opportunity; `A Last Farewell' from Sweden was excellent in dealing with loss in an imaginative and emotional way.

There is also `Middle Man' from Scotland and that was both amusing and yet extremely simple - but thoroughly effective. I was under impressed by this collection as a whole but there is enough here to warrant interest and I was far from bored - hence my rating but 3.5 stars is probably more accurate, but I am rounding up as I always appreciate an independent effort.

This is one of the best of the series, and certainly one of the more surprising. The cover imagery makes it look as if it will be much more conventional than it is, with some photogenic shots of young men, but the contents are far more off the wall. The back of the slipcase shows two separate shots of very good-looking boys, but this Dutch film (called Caged) is actually one of the most obvious and least interesting, telling about an athlete who discovers his training partner is gay, rejects him along with the homophobes and then makes his peace. Far better are the clutch of films at the heart of the programme: two Australian films, Vis-A-Vis and Followers, being very strong. The first shows two men, seemingly gay, trying to get a visa extension and receiving a visit from a young woman from the immigration office to this effect, but things take a number of surprising turns. It is hilarious, especially in the way the boys try to pass themselves off, as it is affectionate rather than making fun. A clue as to their fake setup might be seen in a very substandard quiche they serve up ... Followers is even stranger, too strange to describe, really, but brilliant, formed from the most unlikely elements: a swimming class with an older woman and a young black guy, hunky, on whose shorts she sees the image of the face of Christ, and her church singing group. Kissing Drew is simply fabulous in the way it uses filters, changes of tone through music, to suggest a young boy smitten with his bully and getting his own back - a mini-masterpiece, for sure ... based a bit on the style of Lynx spray adverts of glamour and sudden switches of gear.

Boygame is a marvellous 15 minutes too - the filmic fulfilment of the 'dirty sweet' epithet first floated by T.

Having watched all the previous series of films I found this a very mixed batch, for me the highlight was the "A Last Farewell" directed by Caspar Andreas which dealt beautifully with the loss of a loved one. Others were OK but there was not one which stood out and some were some were just plain boring. Films to watch on a very wet miserable day!

Another collection of films in the Boys on Film series. As always, there are some excellent films and some not-so-good, but still a worthwhile addition to the set! Roll on no. 14!
