Product Description

'Chappie' is a robot, and the first true artificial intelligence, able to learn and develop as a human does. Some want to study him, and others want to destroy him. Kidnapped from the scientist who created him, Chappie becomes part of a street gang's dysfunctional surrogate family, who decide that he is too innocent and needs to be toughened up. Meanwhile, there are people hunting for him who believe that artificial intelligence is too unpredictable to be allowed to exist. The latest film from Neill Blomkamp, director of 'District 9' and 'Elysium', 'Chappie' stars Sharlto Copley, Hugh Jackman and Sigourney Weaver.

An obvious mash-up of Robocop and Short Circuit, Chappie is a highly quirky little dollop of sci-fi. It strays perilously close to irritating whimsicality on many an occasion and the ending is downright bizarre. It is, though, exceptionally well presented with some excellent CGI and surround sound. Some quite spectacular action sequences too, the highlight probably being the battle between Chappie, the gangsters and the "Moose" (think ED209 from Robocop).

There is an incongruity here in that Chappie's comical attempts to become a swaggering gangster appear designed to appeal to children, but the violence and extreme language put this movie way beyond a PG rating.

I can't say I particularly warmed to any of the characters, but it's a reasonably entertaining way to spend a couple of hours. Shame that Sigourney Weaver is pretty well wasted though!

Contains some moderate violence and lots of strong language.

After reading quite a lot of negative reviews of Chappie, I was reluctant to watch this and disappointed being a big fan of District 9. However, I bit the bullet and I have just recently watched this on Sky Movies. I can honestly say, how surprised I was to really enjoy this movie. I find some of the negative reviews astonishing. I accept that this film will not be everybody's cup of tea and it is not perfect, but how many big blockbusters are perfect and don't have flaws. Some of the criticism is totally unfair, it's certain not dull!!! It's a cracking sci-fi movie and has some hidden moral messages and builds to a cracking climax. I found the scenes when Chappie is learning to deal with his new found personality, quite touching and funny, other scenes show how the dark side of human treat beings different to ourselves. I accept there are bits that are far fetched, but it's SCIENCE FICTION!! It's not supposed to be a true story. I enjoyed this more than some so called "must see" movies and enjoyed this than the recently much hyped Star Wars. Star Wars is a good film and highly popular but it's not going to get awards for its script. The storyline in Chappie is not complicated either but no more good or bad as other blockbusters. Chappie hasn't the impact that District 9 had, but it's nowhere near a flop either. If Chappie was real, I would adopt him (ha ha) my daughter would love him. However, this is 15 certified for a reason and overall happy to have a copy of this on my shelf at home. 8/10

What a really smart, sweet, funny and entertaining film this was. The CGI was superb, the robots looked so real, the action was great, the storyline excellent and the location of Johannesburg another coup, just like District 9. South Africa is a great place to film a movie, a backdrop of modern cities, open country, sprawling townships and diverse cultures - Stander & Safe House were also superb thrillers set in South Africa.

Definitely one for your collection, a bit of Robocop meets A.I. South African born director & writer Neill Blomkamp of District 9 & Elysium freely admits it himself, he was a fan of both. He even hinted there may be a follow up as he intended the film to be a trilogy.

Enjoy !

I just had to add my two cents regarding this movie.

I am completely amazed at all the negative reviews of this cinematic achievement! Almost all of them are viewed through American and UK sensibilities. One case in point, is Hugh Jackman's character. I am from South Africa and know many types of people exactly like the character Jackman plays, and dress like Jackman's character daily. Those same people are former defense force and now excell in various forms of engineering and/or farming. Sigourney Weaver's character is exactly the type of corporate approach in South Africa in which the CEO'S and executives simply don't care about anyone or anything or purpose other that profit and making themselves look good. The criticism of the violence in the movie is born of ignorance, as in South Africa, crime and violence is simply an everyday occurrence. I'm not saying it is right or making any excuses for it, but it's simply there. And that's basically the message that Blomkamp is delivering here as well as in Elysium, is that there is always going to be wrongs and inequalities when there is a divide of Haves and Have-nots. Chappie focuses more on the point that strong-arm policing does not fix the problems stemming from inequality.

The action set pieces and visual effects no one can fault. He is clearly making his mark on the scene. The story, while reminiscent of previous sci-fi films it draws inspiration from, is crafted into a new and unique story. Chappie has definitely left his mark on audiences much like the T-800, Johnny 5, Michael Corleone and countless cinematic icons. Visually, the colour palette and sharpness is crisp.

In the not too distant future the streets of 'Johannesburg' the are patrolled by 'Droid Police' that exact
justice with ruthless efficiency.
The Mechanised law enforcers are produced by 'Tetra-Vaal' which is run by chief executive 'Michelle Bradley'
(Sigourney Weaver)
'Deon Wilson' (Dev Patel) creates the programs for the machines, 'Vincent Moore' (Hugh Jackman) the weapons
expert who has ambitions to put a more deadly machine on the market for military purposes.
When during an op' Droid 22' is damaged and considered beyond repair, 'Deon' wants to test a program he's
developed that will add human-like thinking and reactions, 'Michelle' dismisses the idea.
However, 'Deon' has other ideas, loading the damaged machine secretly into the back of a van.........
when both he and the damaged 'Droid' fall into the hands of a local gang, 'Deon' finds himself forced to insert the
program for their benefit, though the Robot will need to learn from scratch, of course the gang have very different
ideas for it's use, the gang-leaders girlfriend gives the humanoid-like robot the name 'Chappie'
The gang wants to use 'Chappie' (voiced by 'Sharlto Copely') to fight back and assist them.......
'Vincent' who's request to develop his weapon-loaded machine further had been turned down by 'Michelle' now has
his chance to prove it's worth as those with the power want 'Chappie' to be one of a kind ordering it's destruction as
it becomes a problem for them.
Not an entirely new idea however 'Chappie's' individual personality is sure to win you over......
There are frequent violent sequences, some quite graphic, there are moments of humour as 'Chappie' learns to think
as would a human.
